A Visitation of Family and Friends will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Macon Road. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 11:00 AM in Edgewood Hall at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Pastor Bradford McDaniel officiating, burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery.
Luis was born on October 30, 1930 in Humacao, Puerto Rico; he is the son of Dionigio Velez and Francisca Reyes. Luis joined the U.S. Army, serving in both Korea and Vietnam. While stationed at Fort Stewart, Luis was here on a TDY, he met a young lady, Sarah Elizabeth Weathers. Luis and Sarah were married in 1956, married for 55 years, she passed in 2011. Together they made the Columbus area their home. Luis retired from the Army and went to work for Pasco Steel and retired after 20 years of service. He loved sports, especially the Braves, Falcons, and the Bulldogs. Luis retired twice, but never stopped working, whether it was repairing small engines, working in his yard, or tinkering or building something. He loved the time spent with family, whether it was just visiting or going fishing, as long as they were together. He was a member of Cascade Hills Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sarah E. Velez; one son, Luis A. Velez; and a daughter, Bessie A. Velez. Survivors include his son, Louis J. Velez; daughter, Lessie Oswald; son, Tommy E. Velez; daughter, Maria (Maggie) Arroyo; son, Christopher A. Velez; 15 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many other family and friends to cherish his memory.
