Columbus, GA- Velma Jean Day, 67, of Columbus, GA, died Thursday, May 9, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, 31907. Interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening, May, 13, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Day was born October 2, 1945 in Hurricane, WV, daughter of the late Clifford and Cathleen Adkins Johnson. She loved to work in the garden, crochet, and most of all just being meemaw.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Day was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Eugene Day.

Survivors include three daughters, Wilma Dawson (John), Margaret Dennison (Michael), and Alice Beach (Evan); one son, James L. Rice; 12 grandchildren, Cathy Rice, Jenny Schneider, Christopher Wright (Crystal), Amanda Wright, Michael Hewitt, Nicholas Browning, Ryan Hewitt, Daniel McMahan, Joshua Beach, Jessica Craighead, Haylee Day, and Jennis Day; nine great grandchildren, Destinee Rice, Ashleigh Schneider, Sadie Browning, Jackson Browning, Seanna Wright, Adah Wright, Dean Wright, Leeann Craighead, and Jasmine Price; two brothers, Gary Johnson (Libby) and Albert Johnson; two sisters, Joan Coyner and Kay Rice (Wade); lifelong friend, Bucky; many nieces, nephews and friends.
