Affectionately known throughout his life as Billy, Bill, Coach, Dad, Grandpa, hard head and Smokey paw;
Bill was born December 3, 1949, in East St. Louis, MO. He grew up in a military family with James and Dorothy, living in many places around the world. He has 7 brothers and 2 sisters, Jimmy, Roy, Greg, David, Mark, DJ, Jonathan, (Sabrina), and Donna. Bill had a son named Christopher after high school and he joined the Army at 17.
Bill served in Vietnam with the 199th light Infantry Brigade. He was severely wounded and medically retired from the Army on November 11, 1969. Bill is a Purple Heart recipient.
Bill returned home from Vietnam to Phoenix, Arizona met and married Sheryl the love of his life in 1971. Bill and Sheryl had two children Glenn and Shelly.
Bill worked throughout life as a police officer, owned small construction companies, and tried a few other jobs but always returned to law enforcement.
Bill prided himself on coaching little league baseball and softball throughout his life, coaching his children and many others.
Eventually, Bill was slowed down a little by the wounds he had received in Vietnam and retired permanently. Bill’s love of westerns, war movies, John Wayne and Ann Margaret was very apparent in his retirement.
After 37 years of marriage, Sheryl passed away in 2008. Bill lost his best friend and the love of his life. He eventually found love and companionship again. He married Kami in 2010. Kami passed away unexpectedly in 2020.
Bill loved talking about sports, the Atlanta Braves, politics, Vietnam, and life lessons with his friends, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, his dog Harley, (anyone else who would listen), including his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, Glenn and Melissa, Shelly (Ken) and Bert, Josh, Emily and Parker, Adam, Taylor, Cole and Morgan, Christina, Edison, Roman, and Berkeley.
There will be a private graveside service for family and friends at 2:00pm est Thursday, February 4th, 2021. In Lieu of flowers please donate to the Wounded Warriors Project or Disabled American Veterans.
