William H. Meeks, 92, of Midland, Georgia died Tuesday, November 27, 2018. Mr. Meeks was born on October 27, 1926 in Chauncey, Georgia. During World War II, he served in the US Navy for three years and served two years in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War. In 1958 he graduated from Georgia State University. For forty-four years he worked at BellSouth, beginning as a pole climber and retiring as a District Manager. Mr. Meeks was an active leader in the Pioneers (Service Group for BellSouth) including one term as State President and three terms as Local Group President.
For over fifty years he has been a member of St. Luke Methodist Church and served on the Administrative Board and Shaw Sunday Class President for three terms. Committed to service, Mr. Meeks volunteered with the Meals on Wheels Program in Columbus for over twenty years and worked with Habitat for Humanity for over 8 years, participating in the building of 90 homes. He was a member of the Exchange Club for over 35 years; where he was nicknamed “The Hot Dog Man” for the thousands of foot longs that he prepared and served at the county fair. Until April, Mr. Meeks enjoyed walking five miles a day at Cooper Creek Park, where he made many friends. He participated in fifteen Peachtree Road Races.
Mr. Meeks was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Jeanette Spear Meeks; sister, Margaret Nunes; and brother, Edwin Meeks. He is survived by his children: Connie & Larry McGough, Randy Meeks, Phil & Sherry Meeks, Jan & Stephen Pullin, and Rebecca & Mike Smith; 8 Grandchildren, and 18 Great-Grandchildren and his beloved cat, Chipper.
Visitation with the family will be held in the Gleaners Sunday School Class at St. Luke Methodist Church in Columbus at 2:00 on Saturday, December 1, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 3:00 in the chapel.
