Dr. Donald Thomas Zimmer, 81 of Sherwood Lane , died at 6:33 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at his home.
Don was born in Cleveland , Ohio on July 1, 1929, the son of Francis and Mildred Perry Zimmer. He married Elaine Henrietta Zimmer on Feb. 4, 1956 in South Euclid , Ohio .
After high school, he served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950. Don received his B.A. from Ohio University , then taught Latin and history at St. Mark’s School in Salt Lake City .
After a short stint at Hercules Powder Co., he moved on to teach Latin, history and government at Tudor Hall in Indianapolis .
He then received his Ph.D. at Indiana University , after writing a history of Madison , Ind. to 1850. He progressed to Professor of History and Government at Tri-State University in Angola , Ind. with emphasis on urban history and city building. During that time Donald wrote a history of Rush County .
Don enjoyed skiing, tennis, bicycling, chess and other games with his wife and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church
He is survived by his wife; children, Mark (Jill) Zimmer, Philip (Christina) Zimmer, MaryLynn (David) Glass, all of Columbus, Matthew (Susan) Zimmer and Michael (Sara) Zimmer, both of Angola , Ind. ; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Francis (Jeanette) Zimmer, of Cleveland , Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James E. Zimmer
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church celebrated by Father Clem Davis. Cal ling will be from 5 p.m. until time of Mass on Monday. In keeping with Don’s wishes, cremation is planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Bartholomew Catholic Church or Hospice of South Central Indiana.
