Dear Herschel was such a good friend. After my husband Mike Mount died, Herschel would call and check on me. I could always call Herschel with and concerns I had regarding legal matters, company matters or just to talk. Herschel would always call me by my first name. I always called him at Christmas. And I seen him almost every Sunday after church having breakfast and we always chatted about life.
I'll miss you friend. Until we meet again!

I am saddened to learn of Hershel’s passing. He was such a kind spirit, so full of grace and wisdom. When I joined Cummins, he would stop by for conversations of encouragement daily! He made me smile and he made me think. Always full of possibility thinking!!!
He loved the Lord so we shared stories of his grace and mercy.

Uncle Hersch was my Aunt Mary Catherine Crocker's husband  and a college friend of my fathers at Wittenberg.  My dad introduced Hersch to his sister Mary.  It was Uncle Hersch who was overseas in the war and met my dad somewhere in the Phillipines and told  my dad that he had a son.  My mom and Aunt Mary were staying with my Grandmother Crocker in Fostoria while they were overseas and Aunt Mary's letter got there first.  Somewhere  I remember seeing a picture of the two of them together at that meeting.
We had many gatherings of the families, including at my wedding.  I have a great picture of Grandma,  Aunt Mary, Patty Ann, Nancy, Cousin Marguerite, my mom and me.  Another one shows Aunt Mary, Uncle Hersch, my Dad and Grandma Crocker. I've attached that as it's a great picture of all of them.
There was a time that John and I were at a B&B near Stone Henge and I was in the gathering room talking to a South African.  Somewhere in the discussion it came out that he had visited the U.S.  I asked him where he had visited, and he said Indiana.  I said,  that I had an uncle living in Bloomington.  Of course it turned out that he not only knew Hersch, he worked for Cummins and that was who he was going to see.
I've lost touch with the cousins, but would love to have you let them know that I remember Uncle Hersch and Aunt Mary and send my condolences.

I knew Herschel and Mary from church. He always greeted me warmly  at church.

 Worked with them on their home.

Hershel helped my older son get a room in the graduate residence at indiana University.

My heart goes out to the children for their loss. Thy are now the older generation.

I can still feel that strong handshake and powerful grip as he asked me how I was 
and how was Coach(my late husband-Elliot) and my two boys.  His sincerity and
genuine interest were evident.  Our parents were close friends over the years,  and
my family always looked forward to seeing your mom and dad when we were in town.
I believe your dad got my boys I.U. sweatshirts and hats, and I think I have a picture 
somewhere.......Losing your parents at any age is so difficult, and my heart goes out to 
you.... Mike, and Patty, and Nancy.  Please know how very much the Dietrich family cared
about your parents and your families.  The world was a better place because your

    I didn't meet  Herschel until around 2  years ago, but I am so happy the good lord allowed that to happen, I will forever miss my handshake at the table and the gracious compliments he doled out so freely. Such a great,kind,gracious human being who this girl will sadly miss .  My condolences. Herschel my friend ,until we meet again I will be trying every day to live up to your gracious positive outlook.

I knew Herschel from church. He was always so attentive to his wife and I thought that was very sweet. He reached out with a very hearty welcome to all every Sunday. A very pleasant man!

Herschel became my boss soon after I joined Cummins.  My appreciation of Herschel grew over time but his influence on me was most marked when I left Cummins for a significant advancement in my career.  I soon realized that I was adopting many of traits that made Hershel such an effective leader.  Herschel was a positive person and a positive force.  This positive trait was a trait that I adopted which served me well in my business career.  I visited Columbus over the years and on each trip I visited with Herschel.  Those are visits I will always cherish!  Last time that I saw Herschel I conveyed the above thoughts!

My prayers are with the Family of Herschel for God's comfort and peace.  Herschel was a great leader at Cummins  Engine Company and made significant contributions to Columbus as a private citizen.  He will be missed.

Chuck Wilt

I work at the Columbus post office and back in 1981 I worked at the service counter and was expecting twins. I use to wait on Herschel a lot and he would always ask how I was doing. After the birth of my boys, one son died after 3 weeks of a heart problem and the other has Down syndrome. I would run across Herschel in the community over the years along with at the post office and he always remembered my sons name and asked how we were doing. He even brought him some Cummins racing stuff one time. One of my daughters works at Cummins and she introduced herself to Herschel and from then on he always spoke to her and asked about her brother. Such a kind and dignified man.
