I have so many wonderful memories of Mary that it is hard to choose. She loved flowers, and the purple wisteria that draped the front of the house was one of her favorites. She was always thoughtful when it came to picking out gifts for her children and grandchildren. The gifts were often unexpected and subtle, as fitted her sensibilities and wry sense of humor. Once she sent me a wire basket in the shape of an apple. It was a small gift but reflected her memory of youthful adventures in the apple orchards of Wisconsin. She also sent me a pin -  as in a woman's dress pin -  that I did not appreciate at the time, it seeming too old for me, and like nothing I would ever wear. However, this year on August 26 to be exact, I remembered the pin, and it brought back not only fond memories of  Mary, but of her incredible intellectual and political depth and breadth which were probably understated and underrated given the conservative times in which she grew up, for such women as Mary were not appreciated then: the pin was a suffragette pin in honor of Susan B. Anthony. Although Susan B. Anthony died before women were finally allowed their right to vote with the 19th Amendment, ratified on August 26, 2019, Mary at least lived to see women in her own family have not only families, but also  amazing careers of their own as nurses, viticulturists, businesswomen and scientists.  I know Mary, wherever she is now, is looking upon her children, wives of children, granddaughters and great-granddaughters with that wry smile of hers and thinking how proud she to have helped shape their lives. I know she shaped my life in ways I am still discovering. Thank you Mary! You will be missed!

Also surviving are ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Richard A. Snapp, M.D.; her parents, Edward and Marjorie (Brandenburg) Helwig; her son, Dr. Robert A. Snapp, M.D.; and her brother, Thomas Helwig.
