He was born on February 8, 1930 in Columbus, Indiana to the late E. Curtis and Margaret Jones. He and his late wife, Vivian, were married for 59 years and were members of First Lutheran Church.
Raymond “Ray” Jones grew up in Florida and graduated from Lakeland High School. He served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman during the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree and Indiana University with a Master of Science degree.
He taught in Columbus, Indiana, for 33 years and retired in 1991. He cared deeply about his students and the teachers that he worked with throughout his career and always enjoyed seeing them in town after retirement.
On April 26, 1957, Ray married his beloved wife, the late Vivian Irene (Hanson) Jones.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine (Jones) McGown, and her husband, Richard; his grandchildren, David McGown and Jessica McGown; siblings, Edward C. Jones and Eleanor (Jones) Glick; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Ray loved his family and he enjoyed all gatherings together.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert “Bob” Jones.
Ray was an active member of First Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir. He was an avid woodworker and fisherman, sang with the Barbershop Chorus, built homes with Habitat for Humanity, honored his military service with a trip to Washington, D.C. with Indy Honor Flight, and was a loving father, grandfather, and neighbor.
A private burial will be held in Columbus with a memorial service to be held later.
