Robert Francis "Bob" Smith

Mr. Smith was born October 06, 1935 in Columbus, IN. the son of the late William R. and Prentess Oren King Smith.

He was a 1953 graduate of Columbus High School and listed in the United States Navy soon after graduating. Mr. Smith was stationed in Guam where he was in the medical corp.

Bob began his career at Columbus Regional Hospital on August 16, 1961 where he retired as a surgical technician on September 17, 2000.

He was actively involved in the Columbus Boys Club. Bob had coached several Little League champion baseball teams. He was a PAL football coach for many years, a Biddy Basketball coach and a swimming instructor at the Boys Club. Bob also coached football at Central Middle School and was a staff volunteer at Columbus Youth Camp for a number of years.

Mr. Smith was an associate member of God’s House of Baptist Church.

The funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Smith will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, July 06, 2015 at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl St. with Rev. Tony McClendon and Rev. Harvey Leggett officiating.

Calling hours will be from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home and from 9:00 am until the time of the service on Monday.

Burial will be in City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given through the funeral home to Foundation for Youth.

Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence “Buddy” King and Shirley, Lewis and Marion Smith and sisters, Irene Humes, Mary Frances Smith and DeWatha McCallister.

Mr. Smith is survived by sisters, Nancy Humes of Jeffersonville, IN. and Lavelma “Peachie” Owens of Johnson City, TN.; a brother, Allen K. (Elaine) Smith of Columbus, IN. and a host of nieces and nephews.
