

Alonzo James Carter, lovingly known as “Jesse” to his family and friends was born November 21, 1947 in Wheelwright, Kentucky to the late Alonzo and Alma Trudy Lee Carter. He was the 3rd of 14 siblings. Jesse graduated as valedictorian from Liberty High School in Williamson, West Virginia in 1966. After graduation, Jesse attended college at Bluefield State College from 1966 to 1969. During those fun college years, Jesse played basketball, majored in Social Science and was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, where he and his frat brothers were known for their “steps”.
In April of 1969, Jesse left college and joined the Marine Corps. During his time of service to the U.S., Jesse fought in the Vietnam War and held a position as an Administrative Chief. Before he was honorably discharged in April of 1974, Jesse attained the rank of Sergeant.
After returning to civilian life, Jesse enjoyed many years in Oakland, California and worked for the State of California, the Postal Service, and Federal Express. In 1994, Jesse returned to college and received an Associates of Arts degree in Computer Science.
Jesse enjoyed his latter years living in Columbus, Ohio along with his older brother, Alonzo “Chief” Carter and sister-in-law, Lenora Carter.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Alonzo, Russell, Jimmy, Frank, Dave, and John Glen; sisters, Evelyn, Loise, Alma, and Helen. To cherish his memory, Jesse leaves a brother, Gene “Bat” Carter and his wife Yolanda Carter of Houston, TX and their son Gene Carter II; sister-in-law, Lenora Carter, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, and neighbors.
Visitation for Jesse will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Schoedinger East, 5360 E Livingston Avenue, Columbus, OH 43232. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 am. Graveside service to follow at Union Cemetery, 3349 Olentangy River Rd, Columbus, OH 43202.
