

August served his country as a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his military service, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1950 and was married shortly thereafter, beginning a devoted partnership that would span more than six decades.
A man of deep faith and community involvement, August was the proprietor of Imperial Dry Cleaners for 38 years. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, the American Legion, and Kiwanis. He was a life member of Motts Military Museum and was also a loyal supporter of the Ohio Historical Baseball team, Muffins.
August enjoyed traveling on riverboats, taking memorable road trips, contra dancing and square dancing, researching genealogy, and collecting antiques especially butter molds and cooper tools.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Miriam Simmons; his mother, Anna (Snell) Simmons; his father and stepmother, Rudy and Freda (Henderson) Simmons; and his sisters, Freda May Simmons, Queen Esther Snider and Carol Hayhurst and an infant sister.
He is survived by his children, Pamela Kimura, Ted (Rosemary) Simmons, Katherine Shellaberger, and Joyce (Robert) Marrazzi; his grandchildren, Melissa (Jesse), Daniel, Angela (Paul), Rhonda, Laura (Jimmy), Beth, Sarah (Tom), Tony (Jenni), Melissa (Charles), and Andrea (Chuck); and his great-grandchildren, Samantha (Keaton), Shawn, Olivia, Chelsey, Vincent, Alissia, Eli, Lili, James, August, Phillip, Anna, Amedeo, and Myles. He is also survived by his brother, Bryce (Barbara) Kester Simmons, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Schoedinger East, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43232, where the funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow with military honors at Glen Rest Memorial Estate in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
