Charles Chuan-Chi Hong, PhD, age 85, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021. A loving, lovely father, husband, and grandfather, Charles was born in Taiwan on December 29, 1935. Charles will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 53 years, Dawn Hong; sons, William Hong and Tyron Hong; daughter, Caroline Hong-Bridges; daughter-in-law, Lailanie De Vera Hong; son-in-law Roger Bridges; grandchildren Troy Hong (18), Shane Hong (15), Amaya Bridges (10), Brees Bridges (10), and Gray Bridges (3).
Charles graduated from National Taiwan University in Taipei and obtained a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and subsequently a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto. His esteemed career as a research chemist and engineer included long-time posts with Columbia Gas System Service Corporation as well as with Energy and Environmental Research Corporation. Even in his sun-setting years, he continued to help a third generation of calculus-learners with their homework. Charles loved watching Buckeye football, writing political opinion letters to the Taipei Times in support of the Taiwan independence movement, eating pizza and drinking beer, listening to Japanese Enka music and the music of pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, and traveling the globe with his family. He'll continue to be with us as we embark on new journeys around the world.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Tzu Chi Foundation (), a Buddhist Taiwanese international humanitarian NGO.
Due to COVID, the family will be having a Private Memorial Service. Please visit www.schoedinger.com to share memories and leave condolences. Funeral arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST.
