

Charles Anthony Johns, 88, of Columbus, OH. and formerly of Marion, OH., entered Eternal Life on May 15, 2010 peacefully with his family by his side.Born September 4, 1921 in Meadville, PA. he was the son of the late Samuel Charles (DiGiovanni) Johns and the late Mary Cecilia (Triola) (DiGiovanni) Johns. Preceded in death, by his wife of 57 yrs., Dorothymae “Babe” Johns and his 4 sisters and one brother, leaving one surviving sister, Frances Santanello, Greenville, S.C., formerly of Meadville, PA. Surviving is his wife, Martha Johns. He leaves his legacy to his five children, Daniel Timothy (Beth) Johns, Lima, OH, Bela Bowley, Mary Charlene Johns, Columbus, OH., Leslie Ann Johns (Joseph) McGeady, Centerville, OH. and Kevin Douglas Johns, Marion, OH, 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, countless extended family and friends.
Mr. Johns was a machinist for Erie Railroad in Meadville, PA, Marion, OH. and Conrail in Columbus, OH. When he retired from the railroad he was Air Brake Specialist and a consultant for Durox Corporation. His extensive knowledge and ability to diagnosis air brake problems over the phone, amazed his employers and fellow railroaders for over 40 years. He loved hunting, fishing, swimming, baking pies, making homemade noodles, his “special” tomato sauce, sewing, and heirloom quilts. Mr. Johns co-founded with fellow railroader, Pete Rollins the Marion Erie Credit Union, presently known as the Marion Community Credit Union, 50 years ago. With his foresight, he answered the need to increase membership by contacting local hospitals, police and fire departments. He was a WWII Veteran US Naval Veteran and was a former member of St. Mary’s Church, Marion, OH. for over 50 years.
A vigil will be held in Columbus at Schoedinger North Chapel located at 5554 Karl Road, on Monday, May 17, from 4 to 7 pm. A Celebration of Life Mass will be said by Father Charles E. Cotton and Father Jim Walters, celebrant at 1:30pm, Tuesday, May 18, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 6077 Sharon Woods Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio 43229. A Christian Burial Service at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Charles memory to The Catholic Foundation, 257 East Broad St., Charles Anthony and Dorothymae Johns Religious Education Foundation.
