

Charles Downey Johnson Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and esteemed Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on August 2, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, he leaves behind a legacy of service, passion, and kindness that will forever resonate with those who knew him.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he cultivated a lifelong commitment to discipline, integrity, and camaraderie. His admiration for military aircraft never faded; he spent decades capturing their thunderous beauty and soaring grace through photography. His images, proudly shared online, transformed his passion into art, allowing others to marvel at the skies he cherished.
For over 20 years, Charles was a beloved school bus driver for Columbus City Schools, where his patience, warmth, and unwavering dedication to safety endeared him to generations of students. Parents trusted him, children adored him, and colleagues respected his steadfast work ethic.
A passionate advocate for Drum and Bugle Corps, Charles devoted himself to groups such as the Maumee Demons, Toledo Glassmen, Ventures of Kitchener (Ontario, Canada), Bluecoats, and Cadets. Whether performing, mentoring, driving buses cross-country, or sharing his love of music, he found joy in the artistry and unity of the drum corps community. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his tales of parades, competitions, and lifelong friendships lit up every room.
Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandy. He is survived by his children, Dee (Marc) Roberts, Randy Kirk, Charles (Stephanie) Johnson III, and Michael Kirk; grandchildren Brittany Dayton, Brandon Dayton, Charles (Christine) Johnson IV, Jacob Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Colin Johnson, and Madeline Kirk; and great-grandchildren JoLynn, Jager, Tate Danner, and Greyson Dayton.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. A man of quiet strength and boundless generosity, Charles taught us the value of hard work, the beauty of music, and the importance of showing up for others. He will be deeply missed, but his rhythm, a testament to a life well-lived, will forever beat in our hearts.
