

Charles L. Mand, 86, of Dublin, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014. He was born June 19, 1927 in Flushing, NY to the late Louis and Augusta Mand. Charlie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who lived a wonderful and fulfilling life. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Louise; children, Jocelyn Shaughnessy, Christopher (Michelle) Mand, M.D., and Vanessa (Paul) Hannah; 6 grandchildren, Ryan (Sadie) Shaughnessy; Alison and Carmen Mand; Will, Jack, and Alex Hannah; 2 great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Charlie Shaughnessy; sister, Marion Coulon; many nieces, nephews, and a wonderful extended family.
After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, Charlie attended Queens College where he played basketball, studied Economics and Biological Science. He continued his education first at New York University and then The Ohio State University studying physical education. Charlie was an elementary and secondary teacher in New York City, became a professor in the Physical Education Department at The Ohio State University and in 1980 became the Director of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He was the Summer Program Director for the Devereux Foundation’s Emotional Disturbed Adolescent Residential Unit for 20 years and a partner in the establishment and management of the Adventure Education Center.
He was passionate about the reward and benefits of all types of physical activity, education, community service and connecting with our natural world. In both his professional and personal life, Charlie worked diligently to create opportunities and offer experiences that proved memorable and rewarding for people of all ages.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio starting at 1:00pm, family will receive friends following the service till 3:30pm.
