

Donald David Hawksworth, 91, of Columbus, passed away on March 11, 2020. He was born on August 10, 1928 in Wellsville, Ohio to the late Virgil and Goldie (Stillwell) Hawksworth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Duane and Eugene Hawksworth, and son, Donald David Hawks worth Jr.
Donald met the love of his life, Bernadine Mekis, at the Peoples Pharmacy in East Liverpool Ohio and married her on December 24, 1949. He was a 1953 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. Upon graduating, Donald was an officer in the United States Army and was deployed to Germany. Upon leaving active duty, Donald was still active in the Reserves, but spent most of his time starting his own pharmacy business that he ran on the Northeast side of Columbus for more than 30 years.
In 1988, Donald relinquished his pharmacy business to Rite Aid and over the next several years he worked as a part-time pharmacist for Rite Aid, Merck Medco, and Kroger where he retired at the age of 80.
In his free time, Donald loved gardening and cooking. During the holidays he was known for always making some type of dessert. He enjoyed collecting Department 56 Christmas in the City and attending his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes football and basketball games. Later on in life, Donald enjoyed singing Karaoke and playing Bingo at The Forum at Knightsbridge. It was here where he got the nickname "Lucky" because he never lost at Bingo.
Donald will be greatly missed by his wife of 70 years, Bernadine Hawksworth; children, Kim (Judy) Hawksworth, Philip (Colleen) Hawksworth; grandchildren, Benjamin Hawksworth, Amanda McDougal, Sarah Borgmann, Scott Hawksworth, Sarah Stoeckel, Andrew Hagans, and Elizabeth Gossage; brother, Virgil "Butch" Hawksworth, and sister-in-law, Loretta Hawksworth.
Donald's family will receive friends from 2 pm - 4 pm on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at the Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 North High Street, followed by a service celebrating his life immediately afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald's name may be made to the American Heart Association.
