Dorothy lived in Columbus her entire life and was an East High School graduate. She married Sylvester Cochran soon after graduation. During their 55 years of marriage three children were born. Even though her primary focus was her family, she also gave time to her community. Dorothy was President of the 11th Avenue Council; received recognition for “Outstanding Service” from the Columbus Recreation Department; and was active in the Parents Teachers Association.
In January 1965 Dorothy was saved, baptized, filled with the Holy Spirit and joined Friendship Pentecostal Church. She was a member there for 27 years. In 1992 she joined New Covenant Believers’ Church and was a faithful servant in many ministries including the Care Ministry, NCB Choir, Women’s Wholistic Ministry; she was also a prayer intercessor and a Berean Conference Volunteer. Dorothy loved serving God and touched many lives due to her godly lifestyle.
Dorothy retired from The Ohio State University as a supervisor in the Nutrition and Dietetics Department. Still wanting to stay active, she became a Certified Home Day Care Provider from 1989 to 2001.
After the loss of her husband, Dorothy found companionship in “Little-Dot-Tae,” her miniature Dotson. When thinking of Dorothy one will picture her showing affection to her dog. And another picture will come to mind: the freedom in the way she expressed praise to the Lord, her dancing in the Spirit and her hands raised toward heaven.
Dorothy was preceded in death by parents; stepfather Willie Gale; husband Sylvester Cochran; daughter Wanda Cochran; son Sylvester Thomas Cochran; grandson Julian Cochran; brothers James Sanders, Theodore Sanders and Willie Levi Gale; and sisters Ruth Smith and Robbie Moseley. She leaves to cherish her memory son Larry Cochran; grandchildren Taryn, Clanci, Camille, Cameron (Star) and Courtney; great-grandchildren Imani, Christian and Elijah; brother Steven George (Kristina) Gale; sisters-in-law Carla Gale, Mary Sanders and Naomi Dennis; and a host of relatives and friends.
