Elizabeth Greene, 85, known to all as Betty, went to be with God on August, 23, 2011. She was born Ann Elizabeth Murray to the late Dennis Murray and Anna Murray (nee Kelleher), on November 8, 1925, in Whitehall, New York. She was the fifth of six children and dearly loved her brothers and sister. As a child, Betty moved to Green Island, New York and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy, New York. She had lots of stories about growing up in Green Island, including the flood, the long walk across the bridge and up the hill to high school, her best friends Dorothy and Gib, seeing Frank Sinatra in concert, and jobs she enjoyed after high school: packing dishes at Montgomery Ward and working at a printing press. She met Del Greene at a roller skating rink in Troy when she was a teenager. She corresponded with him throughout WWII, and they were married on December 27, 1947. Betty and Del moved from Troy to Roanoke, Virginia early in their marriage, and subsequently lived in Baltimore, Maryland; Lutherville, Maryland; Parsippany, New Jersey; Hackettstown, New Jersey; Orion, Illinois; and East Moline, Illinois. After Del’s passing, Betty moved to Dublin, Ohio, and then to Gahanna to be near family. Betty was a devout Catholic, a devoted wife and mother, and an excellent homemaker who enjoyed her radio programs, her “soaps,” movies, and books. She travelled extensively throughout the US. Betty was preceded in death by her sister Margaret McGrath; her brothers, John, James, and Robert Murray; her nephew, Michael Murray; her teacher and lifelong friend, Sister Frances Louise; and her beloved husband, Del, who left us on August 8, 1998. She is survived by her brother, Edward (Mary) Murray; daughters, Sheila Greene of Bellefontaine, Ohio; Joan Shaw of Omaha, Nebraska; Susan (Frank) Spahits of Blacklick, Ohio; and Donna (Mark) Simpson of Aurora, Colarado; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Greg) Gee, Tyler (Dyana) Wolkenhauer, Brian and Amanda Simpson, and Colleen Spahits; great-grandsons, Kevin and Garrett Gee and a great-grandchild Wolkenhauer on the way; special niece, Susan (John) Keegan of Arizona, and many other nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 26, 2011 10:30am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 807 Havens Corners Road, Gahanna, OH 43230, where family will receive friends from 9:30am-10:30am.
