On September 20, 2010 we said goodbye to our adored husband, dad and "Poppy" Ernst Koehler. He passed away at his home in Gahanna after a brave fight against cancer, leaving behind his loving wife of 60 years, Elfriede; daughter, Joanne (Jerry) Miano of Hillsdale, NJ; daughter, Kathryn (Paul) West of Canton, MI; sister Elisabeth Riechert of Kelowna, British Columbia; brother Wilhelm Koehler of Berlin, Germany; brother Gerhard (Rosemarie) Koehler of Karlsruhe, Germany; brother-in-law Richard (Linda) Henselman of St. Michaels, MD; cousin Else (Walter) Woerner of Bloomfield Hills, MI; grandchildren Stephen, Andrew and Anna; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Johanna Koehler and sister Johanna Schaffner. Born in Germany, Ernst learned the trade of drafting before immigrating to the United States in 1951. After serving in the U.S. Army, he studied engineering at New York University and became a registered architect. Through his career he worked for Macy's, Federated Department Stores, and other retailers. He retired from the architectural firm of Segna & Associates in 2008. Devoted to his family and friends, he shared with his children and grandchildren and all who knew him his love of the outdoors, music, gardening, and reading, and his wonderful sense of humor and zest for life. We love you Poppy and miss you dearly. Friends may call at the Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna, on Thursday September 23 from 6-8 p.m. A service will be held on September 24 at Good Samaritan Church, 620 McCutcheon Rd., Gahanna, at 11 a.m. Pastor Clayton Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or Mt. Carmel East Hospice. Visit www.schoedinger.com to leave condolences.
