Dear Ruby, Jim and Joyce

Was saddened to hear of the death of Rev. Jones. Your Dad (Husband) had a dramatic impact on my life's path. I grew up under Rev. Jones' teaching, as my mother used to drag us to church everytime the church doors were open, when he was ministering in Newark. However his real impact on my life occurred later, when he opened my eyes to the wondrous world of plants at the Otterbein Church Camp. This country preacher by hiking with us through the forest and teaching us a few plant names helped me to see the forest as a collection of friends rather than a forbidding green mass. I never realized that I had such a gift for plants and plant names until at the end of our nature hike he asked us to write down on a piece of paper all of the plants that we saw that day and while the others struggled to write down 10 to 15, my list had 70. So at the  age of 12, Rev. Jones started me on the path to becoming a successful Botanist, now a Palm Biologist. I never cease to be amazed at God's creation, especially at the beauty and complexity of  the Palm tree family (ca. 3,000 species).Today I work for a research garden in Miami that specializes in palm trees. I have collected in every part of the tropics and I never enter a jungle, without remembering Rev. Jones, who passed on a bit of his love for the forest to the rest of us. He could never have imagined that he would set this Ohio boy on the way to becoming an expert in Palm trees. So with the fondest of memories for one my most favorite people, I would like to pass on this tribute to the Rev. Jones, who not only opened my young eyes to God, but also to his creation.

To my family,  There are really no words to share what Uncle Evan meant to me. But about the loss one pastor said it well, "Grief has two sides.  We rejoice for him that he finally got to go Home to His Father in Heaven.  But the other side is the hole that grief leaves in us."
