1924-2019
Faye, age 95, passed away peacefully on 8/1/2019. Preceded in death by husband John, to whom she was a devoted wife, married for 55 years.
She was a loving mother to David (Mary), Karen ( Mike) O’Brien, and Susan (Sherman) Smith.
Faye is remembered for the unconditional love she offered to granddaughters Anna (Bryant) Smith, Amy (Hunter) McKnight, and Molly (Joe) Sullivan. Always eager to babysit, Faye and John hosted New Year Eve’s parties for the girls, taught cooking skills and protected the girls from trouble. When Anna, age 4, gave Amy, 1, an unsupervised and severe haircut, Grandma took one look and said “ I think she did a good job!”
Born to immigrant parents Barbara and Urban, Faye was the sixth of 10 children. They were raised in Uniontown, PA.
A longtime member of the Greatest Generation, Faye proudly supported herself at age 19 working in the business office of US Steel. She met John at post-war dance at Idora Park in Youngstown. Together they enjoyed a honeymoon across Route 66; dancing at Pomerene Hall and Knights of Columbus functions; Attending the Snow Bowl in 1950; many family cookouts on the back porch; and golfing together ( even after John hit her in the leg with an errant shot. Faye reported “ I sank gracefully to the ground.”) She loved cooking for him, and often made his favorite foods. He requested no rice ever, after being a Japanese POW. And she never served her family rice.
Faye was a classic 50’s gal- bus trips to downtown Lazarus; hosting Bridge Club complete with refreshments; sewing her own stylish clothes and allowing her children to walk to school unsupervised. She also adapted to and accepted changing times Faye was proudly independent, remaining in her home until her 90’s.
A longtime member of St Matthias Church, Faye supported her children’s school years at St. Matthias and St. Francis DeSales. Her kitchen was always available for pizza parties for her children’s friends.
