Gerry "Petie" Monroe Chattman, Sr., of Gahanna, Ohio, died on Sunday morning, July 19, 2020. He was 66 years old. Gerry was born in Halls, Tennessee on February 23, 1954 to the late John Bernard Chattman and Clara Bell Chattman (Menzie).
In 1972, Gerry graduated from San Fernando Senior High in San Fernando, California. Shortly after his graduation, in January 1973, he joined the United States Air Force where he worked in the medical unit and successfully completed recruiter school. He served as a recruiter until 1995. His tenure with the Air Force awarded him and his wife at the time, Sherri (Smith) Chattman, the opportunity to live in various states across the country until they ultimately settled in Reynoldsburg, Ohio with their 3 children.
If you were to ask Gerry what his greatest accomplishment was, he would say, without hesitation, his children and his grandchildren. He was extremely proud of each one of them and would talk about them constantly. Gerry loved listening to jazz music, cooking, and spending time with his loved ones. He also enjoyed watching football games and loved The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Gerry was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting him, you immediately knew why he was so loved. He was caring to everyone he met and passionate about his family.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents and 2 of his sisters; Shirley Chattman and Nadine Colbert. He leaves to cherish his memory three children; his son, Gerry Chattman, Jr. (Diane) of Pickerington, Ohio, and daughters Gianina Craddock (Rayshawn) of Cleveland, Ohio and Rebecca Birkett (Owen) of Covington, Louisiana; 5 grandchildren; Amir, Isis, Josiah, Camden and Legend; 11 siblings: Barbara Junious (Ernie), Helen Moss, Willie Chattman (Lynn), Johnie Chattman (Cathy), Oscar Chattman (Faye), Floyd Chattman (Sharon), Patricia Jackson (Clarence), Precious Jackson, Tammy Davenport, John Hicks and Larry Hollis; the mother of his children Sherri Smith; his former wife Deborah Zanders; and many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A private visitation will be held for immediate family and close friends by invitation only.
