Helen Huzzy Maxwell, age 100, died peacefully on Christmas morning, 2016 at First Community Village. Born September 5, 1916 in Jamesburg, NJ, Helen was the seventh of the nine children of Jakob Huzzy and Karolina Zastkow Huzzy. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by husbands, Philip Hayes Peterson and James Lynn Maxwell, as well as sons, Philip Richard Peterson and John Kimball Maxwell.
Helen lived a rich and interesting life. Helen and her sister, Mary were the only women to run a fishery on the New Jersey coast. Helen and Mary had married brothers who died within months of each other, leaving the sisters to run the Shore Fishery in Deal, NJ. Interviewed by a local fishing magazine, Helen remarked, "We had a job to do and we did it."
A lover of beauty, Helen surrounded herself with beautiful flowers and beautiful music. At one point Helen arranged flowers competitively. She was particularly fond of violin music. In her waning years she continued to appreciate music, often
keeping time with her feet as she dozed. Four Harmony's Sake, a local Sweet Adeline group , entertained her and wakened her spirit at Roxbury Cottages. She loved having a Davidson High
School String Quartet play for her hundredth birthday.
Another passion of Helen's was the stock market. Completely self-taught, she researched her investments before buying. Her first stock was a single share of Standard Oil. She loved to go to the brokerage and watch the stock ticker.
Helen and husband, Lynn Maxwell ran a successful business (Control Associates) in Tenafly, NJ. They traveled frequently and enjoyed having children and grandchildren meet them at Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes, VT. Helen continued her love of creating memories with handmade Christmas ornaments and embroidering samplers for her children.
Helen is survived by daughters, Gail Peterson Gillingham of Naples, FL and Michele Maxwell Brannock of Columbus, OH. She taught all six grandchildren to play poker and Blackjack, Susan Gillingham Sutherland, James Lynn Mackin, Lisa Lyn Gillingham, Dr. Matthew Lynn Peterson, Christine Peterson Bell and Dr. Glenn David Mackin. All will also remember her special recipe for making a Manhattan.
Helen also leaves sixteen great grandchildren, Brody, Charlie and Erin Sutherland; Caitlynn, Dylan, Conor and Clare Mackin; Anna and Adam Zukowski; Eli, Emerie, Izak, Ian and Abel Peterson; Riley and Molly Bell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Rd. Columbus, OH 43220, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11 am, with Msgr. Stephan J. Moloney. Visitation with the family one hour preceding the service.
The family wishes to thank Mt.Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care for their steadfast support. The aides of Roxbury Cottages were so very caring and creative with Helen. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to a charity of your choice.
