Born on April 16, 1940, in Chicago to Homer and Doris Kuehn, Jim spent his formative years in Decatur and Ft. Wayne, Indiana, then to Lebanon and Sabina, Ohio, where he became an all-state honorable mention basketball player, once scoring 20 points in a single quarter. He graduated from Sabina High School in 1958. In 1962 Jim graduated from Ohio University with a degree in electrical engineering, joined the 178th Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, serving for 6 years, and began his career at Ohio Bell Telephone. In later years he earned the title of Professional Engineer and completed an MBA degree from the University of Dayton.
Jim married Sue Ann Williams on June 13th, 1964, at Grace Methodist Church in Dayton. They lived and worked briefly in Washington Court House, Ohio, then on to Upper Arlington, where he quickly distinguished himself at Ohio Bell Telephone. Jim designed the first microwave communications system in Ohio and oversaw its implementation. He was also instrumental in the design and deployment of early fiber-optic cabling systems throughout the Midwest. Jim retired from Ohio Bell/Ameritech in 1994.
Above all, Jim was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren throughout their schooling, sports, family events and vacations. From his first Zundapp motor scooter Jim loved cars, motorcycles, trucks, and boats, with the family spending many vacations on their boat, the Keen Machine. His enthusiasm, sense of humor, love of sports, and total support of his wonderful family set the course of Jim's life well lived.
Left to mourn his passing are Jim's loving wife, Sue; sons Scott (Tanya) of Hilliard and Todd (Amber) of Upper Arlington and daughter Beth (Brian) of Plain City; grandchildren Riley, Jillian, and Grant Kuehn, and Will and Leah O'Neill; brothers John (Dayton) and Tom (Port St. Lucie, Florida) and countless friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ed.
