

James Robert York, age 85 of Columbus, passed away Friday, October 21, 2011 with family at his side. James was born in Albany, Kentucky, son of the late Leander Sylvester and Cordie Alice York. He is also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita Miller York, brother Roy York, and sister, Ruby Nell Pierce. James graduated Clinton County High School, Class of 1944 and immediately following, he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He fought in WWII and the Korean Conflict and retired as the youngest man to achieve the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. Upon his return home, James began his second career at DCSC and retired in 1984. James was a devoted husband, father and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a Kentucky Wildcats fan and enjoyed spending time outdoors working in his garden. He was an active member with the Forest Park Civic Association and had previously won the beautification award for his residence. He will be greatly missed by his sons, Jim (Sue) and Don (Barb) York; grandchildren, Jeff, Jayme, and Emily York; brother, Charles (Dolly) York, sister-in-law, Opal York; wonderful caring friend, Earlene Rieffenberger; and many other extended family members and dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Monday, October 24, 2011 at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd., where family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 P.M. Sunday.
