

Jean was born in Columbus; a graduate of West High School and was an Upper Arlington resident for over 30 years.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents Harriett and Ernest Brown and brothers William and Robert Brown, both of Columbus. She is survived by her spouse of 63 years, John M Hlay, former gridiron fullback for The Ohio State University 1949-1952, her three children: Jill Hlay Voelker of Freeport, Fl, John B. Hlay (Jean) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and Jeffrey P. Hlay of Dublin, OH along with her four grandchildren: Matthew P. Voelker (Sarah) of Ft. Collins, Co, Lauren N. Voelker of Columbus, CJ Hlay of Chicago, IL and Mitchell Hlay of S. Richfield, OH and great grandchild Lilia R. Voelker (Sarah and Matt).
She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who she adored and loved dearly and dear lifelong friends Kathrine Haddox and Jackie McPherson.
Jean was devoted to her family and community. She worked at Ohio Bell prior to her marriage to John. She devoted herself to her family and children so that they could pursue their personal goals and careers. She was treasurer of Kinder Keys, The Twin Rivers Garden Club, and an active member of Worthington Hills Country Club.
Jean loved entertaining her friends and family around their pool, at OSU football tailgates, or hosting special gatherings with all the Browns and Hlays for a personal visit with Santa. She truly showed her love through her cooking and entertaining and passed these traditions on to her children and grandchildren.
Jean enjoyed a variety of activities with her family including water skiing on the Scioto, Snow skiing in Aspen, tennis, and golf. She loved to travel with her family and spent her free time on hobbies such as gardening and cheering on the OSU Buckeyes.
She supported her children's and grandchildrens' sports and personal pursuits which included her daughter Jill's swimming (USA Pan American Team bronze medalist), son John's football career at Bowling Green University, son Jeffrey a PGA golf pro, grandson Matt's swimming as Capt. of The Ohio State University's Mens' Swim Team, and granddaughter Lauren's BSN, RN nursing career at Riverside Hospital.
She returned to the workplace as an administrative asst. with The Kimberly Group of Dublin Ohio, and the McCloy Financial Group before retiring.
Jean resided her final year at the side of her husband at Kensington Place in Columbus, Oh.
