Jean (Lockwood) Steva passed away peacefully at home in Columbus Ohio on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at age 81, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Jean was born in 1939 in North Lewisburg Ohio, the second of six children. She attended Bellefontaine High School for three years before she graduated from Zanesfield High School in 1957. She married Pete Steva in 1963 and they soon moved to Columbus, where Pete was a teacher at Upper Arlington High School, and they had three children, Eric, Andrea, and Megan. Being a devoted wife and mother was her greatest joy. Before she had children, she worked as a secretary for Swongers Furniture in Moulton Ohio and Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. She was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child was in high school and went back to work as a secretary at The Ohio State University with the Extension Entomology service. She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Upper Arlington for over 50 years, where she was a member of the Women's Circle and volunteered for a time with their preschool. Jean was known for her love of children and her family referred to her as the "Baby Whisperer", as she never met a crying baby she couldn't console. She never turned down an opportunity to hold a baby. Jean volunteered with Twig and her children's school PTO. She made lifelong friends from her bridge group. Her and her family loved to travel, and even lived in the former West Germany while Pete taught with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in the late 80's. Her family also hosted many international students over the years. Jean enjoyed her daily newspaper and was known for her daily walks around her neighborhood. For the last 23 years, she, Pete, and her brother Jim and his family owned a farm in Marysville Ohio, where they spent many afternoons and hosted family reunions and get-togethers. Despite developing Alzheimer's, she maintained her sweet, kind personality and kept her love for children. Pete was devoted to her and lovingly cared for her at their home through this time.
She is survived by her husband, Pete Steva, and children Eric (Elizabeth) Steva, Andrea (Alex) Garcia, and Megan Steva, and siblings Phyllis (Paul) Foreman, Sandy Johnson, Ken (Jackie) Lockwood, Marge Blount, Jim (Mickie) Lockwood, sister-in-law Lois Christen, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Elsie (Webb) Lockwood.
