Born and raised in Kadipashaj, Lushnje, Albania, Jim Velio learned from his parents at a young age the value of hard work and perseverance. He was a brave young man, when he escaped the iron fist of the oppressive regime of Enver Hoxha. He stayed in Greece for a couple of years, learned the language and sharpened the surviving skills while nourishing his forever dream to come to the USA. Finally, the day came when he boarded a plane to Ohio on a one-way ticket.
Tommy’s Diner gave him his first job in Columbus as a dishwasher. Despite not speaking any English, he and his friend bought their first restaurant, the Easy Street Café in German Village. With his unusual hope and determination, his strong work ethic and forever entrepreneur spirit, Jimmy quickly established himself as a successful restaurateur. He loved to have people share their joy together. He loved to feed people. He loved to give hope to everyone. From his first business, he went on to operate several dining places, breweries as well as real estate properties.
But Jimmy was more than a successful businessman. He was a devoted husband, father, son and friend, known for his kind heart, enlightening smile and generous spirit. He gave back to the Columbus community in countless ways. He was known for his support to local charities and organizations. He has always been there to lend a hand to everyone.
Despite his success, Jimmy never lost sight of where he came from or the values that got him to where he was. He hosted many Albanians in his home and business. He encouraged them to pursue their dreams and helped them start their own businesses. Jimmy continued to work hard every single day of his life, never taking vacation and always striving to improve the quality of services in his businesses. He kept working to his last days in MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas, never being submissive to medical conditions.
We will mourn the loss of a successful Albanian, who embodied the spirit of the American Dream and inspired us all to reach for the stars. Jim Velio will be greatly missed by us all, but his legacy will live through his wife Elenida (Ida) and his three children: Everest, Erzen and Flori, who Jimmy was so proud of. He will be remembered forever by the countless lives he touched and the countless hearts he warmed.
Rest in peace, our Jimmy!
