

John was born on May 8, 1941 to John and Irene Ledingham in Portsmouth, Ohio. After graduating from Springfield High School, he went on to study at The Ohio State University, where he received his B.A. in Journalism, and his M.A. in International Journalism. He then served as the Public Information Officer at the Public Utilities Commission, State of Ohio and the Director of Communication, Office of the Attorney General, State of Ohio. After receiving his PhD in Educational Communication, New Technologies in 1980 from The Ohio State University, he began a distinguished career as a college professor and communication and public relations researcher. John was on the faculties of Southern Illinois University, San Diego State University, University of Houston, University of Evansville (Chair), and Capital University, where he retired as Professor Emeritus. After his retirement John and Pegge moved to Hilton Head Island, SC and he taught at Savannah State University.
John was a prolific researcher and his work regarding the definition of public relations as relationship management was published in numerous academic journals including Communication Yearbook, PR Review, Journal of PR Research, Journal of Promotional Management. Working with Steven Bruning he wrote the book: Public Relations as Relationship Management. And, with Eyun-Jung Kim, wrote the book PR as Relationship Management.
John met the love of his life, Pegge McConachie in Columbus, where they were married and raised their family. Together they enjoyed his passion for playing music and his love of Ohio State Basketball. But more than anything, he loved spending time with John, Kristin and grandchildren.
John was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers, Jerry and Michael. John is survived by his wife, Pegge, his son John (Susan) Santa Cruz, CA and their daughter Kristin Pierce (JC), New Canaan, CT, grand children Jack and Ethan Ledingham and Harper Pierce, his brother Steven, as well as his Aunt Sally Voiers, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
