

Dr. John A. Lott, PhD, is free. He died on Monday, January 9, 2017, peacefully at home from complications from Parkinson’ Disease. He was born in Achern, Germany, October 30, 1936. Preceded in death by his parents Ethel and Richard Lott and sister, Carol Solomon of Dallas, TX. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gerlinde; his son Christopher (Kristen); grandchildren Allison and Jeremy Lott; sister Dorothy Lawrence of Toms River, N.J. and brother Warren (Annelies) Lott of Berwyn, IL, brother in law, Hans-Juergen (Karin) Berger and many other family members and friends in the U.S. and Germany. John received his B.S. in pharmacy, M.S. in pharmaceutical chemistry and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He taught chemistry at the University of Michigan, Flint College, for three years, then in 1968 accepted a joint appointment to the College of Medicine and University Hospitals Chemistry Laboratory of The Ohio State University where he remained until retirement. Dr. Lott was a member of the American Assoc. for Clinical Chemistry; Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, and member of the American Chemical society. He was the author of three books and over 180 publications in the field of enzymology and clinical chemistry. In 1986 , John was awarded the AACC Education Award and the Outstanding Teaching Award from The Ohio State University Alumni Association. In 1994, he was the recipient of the Miriam Reiner award of the Capital Section of the AACC for outstanding contributions to clinical chemistry. He thoroughly enjoyed his 31 years at O.S.U. supervising the Chemistry Laboratory, conducting research, and especially teaching and advising his graduate students. When not thinking about chemistry, John enjoyed bicycling, camping, photography, hiking with the Central Ohio Hiking Club, going to Columbus Symphony concerts, and above all, seeing his grandchildren growing up. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 13th at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Rd. Upper Arlington with Rev. Katherine Kinnison officiating. Visiting hour at 10 A.M., with a luncheon following John’s service. Arrangements entrusted to the Schoedinger Northwest Chapel.
