

Joyce A. Foster, age 83, of Worthington, formerly of Upper Arlington, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Joyce Annette Monroe was born on February 19, 1927 in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late Anna Mae Lefever Monroe and Harold E. Monroe. She is also preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Gilbert S. Monroe and Edith Bright Monroe of Portsmouth; and her fourth brother, Don at the age of 49. Her elementary school years were spent in Portsmouth. At age fourteen she was enrolled in The Linden Hall Academy in Lititz, Pennsylvania, the oldest private girls’ school in the United States. After graduation from Linden Hall she attended The Ohio State University as a student of architecture. The year 1946 was not a good year for women to enroll in engineering colleges. At age 49, Joy returned to OSU to study in the English Department and pursue her love of classical music by studying music history. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in 1982 and a Masters of Education, Human Services, in 1987. This degree led to licensure as a mental health counselor (L.P.C.) in 1992. She was also busy in the role of loving mother to two adoring daughters. She enjoyed reading, watching the Cincinnati Bengals, cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes, and attending the Columbus Symphony Orchestra concerts. She was a member of Worthington Presbyterian Church, the Women’s Association of the Columbus Symphony, Camp Fire Girls, and Beaux Arts. Joy is survived by her husband of seven wonderful years, George B. Foster, whom she met when she first came to Columbus as a young woman, and happily met again later in life. She is also survived by her two daughters, Lisa (Tomas) Esteve, Molly (Mike) Capuano, their father Leland F. Brubaker; seven grandchildren, Sofia, Agustin, Daniel, and Carlos Esteve and Chloe, Carter and Connor Capuano; and three brothers, Tad, Tom and Jim Monroe. Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 2-4 pm at Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 North High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085. Funeral services for Joy will be on Monday, March 8, 2010 at 11:00 am at Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085. Pastor Jeff DeYoe officiating.
