Khoi was born on June 10, 1942 in Quang Nam, Vietnam to the late Quang Nho Nguyen and An Thi Do. His parents moved the family to Saigon to start a business supplying stone, concrete, and clay for residential construction. Khoi served in the Republic of Vietnam from 1966 to 1975 as a veterinarian. In 1969, he studied abroad in Chicago, Illinois where he completed the Veterinary Preventive Medicine and Food Inspection Course certified by the United States Army. This trip enlightened and broadened his view on what a free and a better life would be like.
Khoi lived a very simple and frugal life. He saved money for his children to escape from Vietnam because he envisioned that all of his children would have a better life in the US. He eventually migrated to the US with his wife and youngest son, sponsored by his older sons. Currently, the entire family is all together in the US. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting stamps, listening to music, and playing the guitar.
In addition to his parents, Khoi is preceded in death by his sister Thanh Quang Thi Nguyen (2024) and granddaughter Isabelle Nguyen (2017).
Khoi is survived by his wife, Thu Thi Pham; his sister, Thanh Hoa Thi Nguyen; his sons, Phong (Trinh) Nguyen, Sinh (Liliane Giau) Nguyen, Khoa (Cindy Thuy) Nguyen, Hanh (Ly) Nguyen, and Lam Nguyen; his grandchildren, Rachel, Lan, Danh, Kim, Thomas, Lyn, and Katie.
