Lajos L. Szabo, entrepreneur, strategy-expert and business innovator, died Tuesday at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio, after a hard-fought battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was 58. Mr. Szabo was born June 28, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, where he lived the rest of his life. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati and then went on to co-found Applied Retail Systems where he managed the business operations. With his background in architecture, Mr. Szabo revolutionized public school buildings in the Dublin, Ohio, area that benefitted the education of the students, while he worked at Fanning and Howey. These ideas consisted of implementing larger windows in schools to let more natural light in, promoting a more conducive learning environment. Mr. Szabo held executive positions at both Schoedinger Funeral Services and Funeral Choices. Both positions dealt with the virtual world of funeral home operations which adhered to new consumers in the marketplace. In the final years of his business career, Mr. Szabo was the president of funeral operations for FuneralOne at Hello Innovation. He developed a website for the company that allowed families to efficiently customize their funeral service experience to better portray the life of the deceased. Mr. Szabo was brought on to augment industry content, help organize operations and to create a game-changing business model for funeral services. Mr. Szabo is survived by three children, Rachel Szabo of Venice, California, Zack Szabo of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Christine Szabo of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Marcus Szabo of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Margit Lister of Ogden, Utah; his significant other, Mary Jo Boyd; and parents, Lajos and Wilhelmina Szabo.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road in Columbus, OH 43221, Ohio. A reception will immediately follow the service until 5 p.m. The family has requested that any donations be made to the Kobacker House or the James Cancer Research Center.
