Leland L. Brooks

Leland L. Brooks, Jr. age 77, of Columbus, OH passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012. He was born to the late Leland Sr. and Eliza Brooks on June 29, 1935 in Monmouth, IL. Leland was a loving supportive husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He attended Monmouth Elementary and Monmouth High. He then graduated from Franklin University with a degree in Business and later received his Bachelor of Computer Science from Devry University. Leland joined the US Air Force during the Korean War from 1957-1961. He belonged to the Gahanna American Legion Post 797. He was the first African American Supervisor for John Deere and retired after 26 years of service. In the late 1950s Leland started a drill team called the Thundersteps with a group of friends. In his free time, Leland loved writing short stories and had several of them published. He coached basketball at the local YMCA and was an avid Chicago Bears and White Socks Fan. In addition to his parents, Leland was preceded in death by his children, Cecil Brooks and William McKinley Brooks; sister, Teresita Brooks; brothers, George Leland Brooks and Cecil Cordell Brooks. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy Brooks; child, Donna (Clarence) Dillard; sons, Charles Edward (Maria) Currens, William “Bill” (Lois) Currens, Wayne Allen (Arlene) Currens and Pierre Patterson; siblings, DuWayne Brooks, Dennis (Nancy) Brooks, and Denise Brooks; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; nephew, Alexander (Rachel) Spangler; extended family and friends. Friends may call from 4-7pm on Friday, December 7, 2012 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL1051 E. Johnstown RD. (at BEECHER RD) Gahanna, where the Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, December 8, 2012 Interment at Mifflin Cemetery.
