Robert Dennis Back

Robert D. Back, 87, passed away at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus on Monday, February 15, 2016. He was born on March 5, 1928 in Columbus, OH to the late Thomas and Christine (Metcalf) Back. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Mae (Jordan); sons, Daniel and Steven; 2 brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his sons, Richard (Terry) and Timothy (Cheryl); daughter, Cindy; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, John; several nieces, nephews, and extended family. Bob was a big-rig driver to surrounding states most of his life and was very proud of his driving record. After his wife's death, he cared for his severely handicapped daughter by himself for 20 years. For more than 4 years, he drove 40 miles to see and feed Cindy at Heinzerling every other day. He was ornery, kidding and teasing everyone within reach. He was fiercely independent, utterly honest, frugal but generous, a kind and loving parent and grandparent, and an excellent example of how to live a good life. Family will receive friends 6-8 pm Thursday at Schoedinger East Chapel, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., where the funeral service will be held 10 am Friday, February 19, 2016. Interment to follow at Jefferson Township Cemetery in Blacklick. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heinzerling Foundation, 1800 Heinzerling Dr. Columbus, Ohio 43223.
