Robert M. Shaevitz, 89, passed away peacefully at Dublin Retirement Village wearing his The Ohio State University shirt on August 31, 2022. Bob was born on January 14, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio as the youngest son of Albert and Anna Shaevitz, brother of Sarah, Sanford, and Libby. He has been looking forward to joining his wife Frances (aka Fran) who preceded him in death.
Known as Bob the majority of his life, he switched to Robert in the seas of other Bobs when he moved into Stone Oak Retirement Community in Hilliard after Fran passed. Depending on when the event occurred both Bob and Robert will be used in the obituary.
Bob and Fran left behind a wonderful family including their children Ben Shaevitz and his wife Lori Sands, Amy Russell and her husband Brad, and Kay Paazig and her husband Tom. Bob and Fran have 6 beautiful grandchildren Samantha (Russ) Goodwin, Emily, and Matthew Bouhall, Max, Josie, and Myles Paazig. Grandpa Bob was thrilled when the next generation started with great grandson Scott. He also leaves behind a large extended family including many nieces, nephews, cousins as well as friends, and many business associates who will miss him.
Bob attended The Ohio State University where he studied Business Administration. He purchased his first business in Chillicothe, Ohio prior to graduating from Ohio State University. Being a lifelong Buckeye fan, Bob would be saddened if his celebration of life interrupted game day. We all have fond memories of going to football games as a longtime season pass holder as well as attending many bowls games. Go Bucks!
Bob served our country two years in the Army returning to Ohio with his bride Fran. They lived in Columbus before moving to Chillicothe. In Chillicothe, Bob was quite the entrepreneur establishing Chillicothe Iron and Metal as well as building his real estate portfolio. He turned a sailing hobby into a new business called Luv Sailing Company, selling sunfish sailing boats. He planned a housing community and bought and sold several of apartment communities, and eventually owning office buildings. Fox and Hounds Apartments was his greatest success. He loved the business of investment, following his stocks and portfolio was his hobby and passion. The Wall Street Journal was his “go to” daily read as well as his fond calls to his Financial Advisors.
Bob and Fran moved from Chillicothe to Lake White in Waverly, Ohio. He stayed active in the community of Chillicothe and Waverly with the Rotary Club and community theatre. After moving from Lake White, they ended up in Columbus.
Bob made many memories traveling the world. World-wide destinations include Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, England, Egypt, Russia, China, Costa Rica, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada and more. He also visited all over the United States including trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, Maine, New Mexico, California, New Orleans, Yellowstone and many places in between. Many friends and family shared in these trips.
Bob and Fran had a second home in Delray Beach Florida. He was an avid tennis player and loved to boast that they watched Serena and Venus Williams train at Lavers Tennis Resort. They moved from Delray to Cape Coral enjoying the birds and navigating the pontoon on the canals out to the Gulf of Mexico. Bob and Fran left their Florida friends behind and relocated back to Columbus to be with family full-time.
Grandpa Bob loved to take the grandkids to the theatre, the zoo, sporting practices, games, and matches. No matter what the team’s colors were, he would be sitting in the stands in scarlet and gray cheering them on. He encouraged learning and education and loved to ask them about their plans for their life frequently. The grandkids loved and appreciated all that he did for them, and he will be missed.
After Fran’s passing Robert continued to make new friends at Stone Oak Retirement Community in Hilliard, Bluebird Assisted Living in London, and Dublin Retirement Village Assisted Living in Dublin.
Special recognition to Robert’s wonderful caregiver, Beverly Wilson, who was the glue that kept our family together. She lovingly helped Bob care for Fran until her passing. Bev then returned to care for Robert in his final years. Bev pushed Robert to walk again after being wheeled out of rehab in a wheelchair. She helped with memory strategies as his dementia increased. Bev was his social director finding people to play cards and rummikub as well as getting him involved in activities. Bev was a great companion to him.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org in Robert’s name.
A memorial service will be held on October 15th 1:30 pm at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road Columbus 43221.
One of the family members has an extreme allergy to fragrance. Fragrance causes them anaphylaxis or airway closure, resulting in a trip to the ER. We are asking everyone to avoid anything with a fragrance including cologne or perfume, hair spray, lotions. and body sprays. An odor neutralizing spray will be available at the entrance to the funeral home if needed. Thanks for keeping everyone safe so we can all attend the service.
