I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my deepest sympathy.  May you find comfort from your memories, as well as the comfort found in God’s word the bible.  In particular the scripture found at Revelation 21:4 which says, “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

I met Rodger in 1978 on the banks of the Scioto River. We had floated down the river and landed on Rodger land and was hunt ducks. Then one of his friends came down to the river and was also going to duck hunt. They had a 12 year friend with them and wanted to go down the river in their boat but did not want to take the young man with them so they asked us if he could stay with us until Rodger the land owner came down to hunt with them. So said sure no problem. When Rodger showed up he started hunting with us. I just remember that we were calling ducks and shooting a few. It was a very cold day the chill factor was below zero and windy. Rodger asked what kind of duck call I was using and then he show me his duck call. He pulled out a big bottle of Jim  Beam and said this he calls ducks. I will always remember that day. We were privileged to know Rodger and Marilyn for the next 30 some years. He will truly be missed by me and my hunting buddy. (Terry Rife)

It's with great sympathy we send our deepest condolences to Roger's family and friends. He will be surely missed by many. I can't think of a single time that he wasn't there for me and my family. He was a very special man with numerous talents. His heart was as big as they come and always willing lend a helping hand. From the first time I met him we shared a special bond. My best memories are of times spent together in the combine, as he worked and I talked his ear off. He even taught my kids how to rid the corn fields of racoons! They will never forget the sight of just the tail sticking up out of the corn head. 
As strong as he was, and as direct he could be at time, he also had a soft side we seldom saw. I saw it when we both shed a tear in the combine as i told him of our plans to return to Maine. He made it very clear then and he held true to his word- our friendship would not change with distance! He had always told me what his was mine  and to "hunt it like you own it". That's the kind of guy he was.
The stories can go on and on. We all have some great memories. He fought a courageous battle and he went way too early in life, but I'm sure he's resting better now, and the pain is all gone.
Rest in peace my friend, we love you.

I met Roger in 2006 while "learning the ropes" of how to grow a giant pumpkin by my cousin Joe Gerchy.  Roger so graciously allowed us to grow our "giants" on his property year after year. He was brutally honest and would tell you like it is......but he had a big heart.  He always had a good joke and a sense of humor....just don't piss him off !  LOL.  I will always remember him and will truly miss him.  His untimely passing was very sad indeed.

It was a pleasure to have known Roger for so many years and the memories with him will live on forever. Deer hunting with him each fall was an adventure all its own and no two seasons were the same. He dearly loved having Ed, Chris, Matt, Tim, and the Flaherty kids each year.

He very generously provided me with a little plot of land upon which to engage in the madness of growing giant pumpkins and allowed me to finally experience the thrill of victory at the scales. It was also a great attraction for him to show visitors and he especially loved to show his grandchildren.

Roger was a very frugal farmer and knew how to conserve his resources when so many others were spending their booty after a bumper crop year. He never felt the need to spend on new equipment unless he had to. The old red International grain truck is perhaps the most stark example. Dewey and I loved that old truck but Tim Ritchey did not. I remember one particularly hot summer when Tim and I were hauling wheat for him from the Immel farm to Kingston and, after one trip in "Ol Red" along route 159 over the hill and around the curve, Tim balked at any other trips in it as it had a tendency to be a "bit light on the front end" with 400 bushels on it. What little help with his farming I provided was a big thrill for me, as I had always wanted to be a farmer since I was a young lad.

It is sad to lose a friend at such a relatively young age, but I truly believe he is happy where he is now. Watching him struggle the past few years with health issues was very difficult for me having known what a robust, hard-living man he was and, when he was no longer able to farm, something very significant was lost to him.

To the family and friends of Roger Evans,

What an honor and pleasure it was to have met him.  A man with a mind of his own but one who could have a lasting impression with any person who comes in contact with him.  I only knew him for a short time but what a character!  I knew from the start, I could call him a friend because he liked home cooking, lived off the land and enjoyed a good thick bologna sandwich with fresh tomatoes and chips on the side (yum).  

I enjoyed the conversations we had as well as appreciating his opinion even though it may not have been mine, but he also appreciated my thoughts and opinion.   I know he was struggling with his health but he was not willing to give up and was a fighter.  We shared life experiences, our ups and downs, and the adversity we had faced throughout our lives.  We shared the same interest in music which was kind of weird because of the age gap.  We agreed to disagree on health, politics and religion but he let me share my experiences and I think I may have swayed him, lol, I hope.

I'm sad because I only knew him for a short time but he had a lasting impression on me and my daughter.  My deepest sympathies to his Family and Friends who will be impacted the most, for it is much harder to let go of the ones who become such a part of our lives.  God Speed Roger! Roger was one my Dad's best friends for as long as I can remember.  I have many memories of our regular Sunday morning visits from the time I was young to after I had my own children, meals at the house, 4th of July Parties, hunting conversations, and social hour at the Shifty's that used to be in South Bloomfield.  We cooked many of Pork Tenderloin together at the sidewalk sale and Pickaway County Fair.  You can imagine the education I got:)  Julie, Bart, my sister, and I showed pigs in the open show at the Pickaway County Fair.  Julie and Bart were a bit younger so I got to be the one that got all the coaching from Dad and Roger until they were old enough to show.  Roger definitely knew pigs.    

Most recently I spent time with Roger talking farming and handling some of his bookkeeping.  Wow, he was an organized guy and he loved anything to do with farming. One day this spring I mentioned that his corn looked a little yellow as I drove back the lane.  I had no idea he would trust my judgment.  He was immediately on the phone trying to figure out what was going on.  I think he trusted me because I'm an OSU graduate:)  We all know what a fan he was of Ohio State.  I remember not having a clue who Champ Henson was but Roger often talked about Champ's football career at Ohio State. It was 20 years before I ever met Champ that I learned about his football career from Roger.  

We also had many debates about politics, relationships, and things going on in the world.  He definitely had strong opinions.  One day I asked him how he got so strong willed.  He told me his grandmother Julia had one way, it was always her way then I suddenly understood:) Roger had his own communication style for sure but you always knew he was a good solid guy underneath the gruffness.   I remember being really impressed by how he and Marilyn supported both of my parents through their divorce and in turn, supported my sister and I.  It was probably the first time I saw the sentimental side of Roger.  Most people don't know how to act in a divorce situation but they made us all feel comfortable.  

I can't write a memory of Roger without telling the story about my sister catching the Wheat field on fire during one of the 4th of July parties.  Roger bought bottle rockets for all of us kids to let off during the cookout we were having.  He made these nice pipes that stuck out of ground, not surprising now that I understand how organized he was, so we could easily insert and light our bottle rockets.  After many successful launches my sister lit another bottle rocket.  The wind must have switched directions and her bottle rocket found the Wheat field.  The next things we knew there was smoke coming from the wheat field.  Several people helped put out the fire and luckily the damage was minimal.   I thought for certain that my sister was going to be in the biggest trouble of her life.  Much to my surprise neither Roger or my Dad yelled at her.  She gave us a memory that we could talk about and laugh about forever.  

As we worked on his bookkeeping his conversations often led to his grandchildren because he had pictures on his computer screen.  He was very fond of them. He was also very appreciative of everything Chris did for him as well as Kathy.  I know he was very thankful to have Heather to care for him daily.  She made things much simpler for  Roger and helped out the other folks that had been helping out for the last few years. 

I will definitely miss Roger's humor and our debates.  I'm thankful for the time I got to spend with him and the memories our families had together.
