Dear Collins Family Members,

I joined the Sunbury Golf League a few years ago, and Scott was my first partner.  He welcomed me to the group, and it was a pleasure to get to know him during our evenings on the course.  His comments and stories made it very clear how much his family meant to him.  Over the last two years when we were in separate groups, Scott would go out of his way to say hello and chat for a few minutes.  He was a very special member of the golf league.

Words never seem appropriate at times like this, but I hope that you will find comfort and peace in your fond memories.  Scott was a great man and he will be missed.  You are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Hi Grandpa, 

I am learning to play the piano, I wish was good enough, I would have played some of your favorite music for you yesterday. I took a beautiful rose from your bouquet and will keep it forever. I saw the picture of you and me sitting in the rocking chair on our front porch as you read to me. I was too young to remember, but will always love that picture.
 I do remember the disney princess ball you bought for me and we played with it at your house.....thank you Grandpa. You were my one and only grandpa and as my dad would say you did good!!!!

 John and I enjoyed your company for many years with the "gang" at Windward
and the many conversations that we had together. You were truly a gentle-man and Sandy a true lady with her love for you.

When I lost my beloved John, I found this small quote that helped me a lot and I include this to you and Sandy.

"Grief is like the wake behind a boat. It starts out as a huge wave that follows close behind you and is big enough to swamp and drown you if you suddenly stop moving forward. But if you do keep moving, the big wake will eventually dissipate. And after a long enough time, the waters of your life get calm again, and that is when the memories of those who have left begin to shine as bright and as enduring as the stars above."

This time of the season brings back the most of my memories with Grandpa.  My sister Amy couldn't have summed it up better!  Running around in the basement, hanging on the back porch watching TV and playing in the backyard at such great family gatherings.  It is difficult these days to have such large family gatherings, but the ones at the Collins' house won't be forgotten.  I will always remember this time of year at Grandpa and Grandma's house.  

I will remember Grandpa as a smart, charismatic and family oriented man.  He has joined some of the ones he loved so much and may he rest in peace with them.    

I wish I could be there with the family at this very difficult time and send my deepest regards.

Scott, I remember our first meeting, when I flew in to Columbus in an Air Force jet (T-33) from Washington D.C. in 1977, before Pam and I were married.  You and Emily welcomed me like a family member.  You and I "Hit it off" immediately with talks of flying and golf.  I was so impressed that you got your own airplane and learned to fly and that we got to fly some together.  You had the talent to be a Fighter Pilot.  I always looked forward to the years we were able to go to the Memorial Tournament together.  We played some memorial rounds of golf, some with your friends, Shawn and Walt.  We couldn't play "worth a damn" but it was fun.

We both had the same political views, and the many times we "solved' the world's problems with Manhattans in your basement bar are cherished memories I will never forget.  I  shared your love for "Big Band" music.  We had a lot of laughs through the years in Columbus and in Austin, Texas.  It was always a special treat to spend Christmas and Special Family gatherings at "Your Place".  I will especially miss it this year because there will be no more.

It has been my honor and pleasure to be part of your Family and to count you as my Special Friend.  Pam, Nick and I already miss you and when "my time" comes I look forward to joining you on the other side. Rest In Peace.

I was in the golf league with Scott.  He was a good man who we enjoyed having in our league.  He will be missed by us as a golfer, but I could also tell how much he was loved by the people he had around him.  Their devoted compassion lets me know he was truly a "special" person.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I did not know Scott, but I know his wonderful son Patrick Collins  If Scott was anything like Pat, he must have been a true inspiration to all of those around him.   I understand Scott was like so many of those that we now see passing .  He was a member of the "Greatest Generation."   Fortunately, he endowed his son Pat with these same virtues.   

May all the member's of Scott's family find strength in God during this difficult.  He is where we shall all find true peace in the love of our Lord's heart.

Congratulations my dear Friend.   No more hooks, slices or balls in the water just long, straight hits that go where you want them to go and of course, at least 50 degrees!

You are a son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to the Collins/Metzger clan but somehow, over the years, you drew me into your fold.  You became my “surrogate” father, my brother and especially my friend.  You loved your family and Emily and  I thank you for making me a part of that.  I’m sure you two are making up for  “lost time”.    

 I will miss our long talks, from politics to market wisdom to everything in-between. You never failed to make me smile with your opinions of political situations, never once biting your tongue or being politically correct.   You taught me well and I enjoyed the few areas where I could teach you things.

 The many, many, almost endless memories I have of you could fill a stadium…from our golf games, to Masonic meetings, from sitting quietly on the patio and watching the deer to sipping Manhattans and telling “war” stories.  How I miss that.  I am sure, as you have told me,  the Reds will rise again.

In your own words, “Markets go up, markets go down.  If we didn’t like it today…it will change tomorrow.”  It was an honor to serve you.

Keep me in your foursome and when my time is up, we will be together again.

There will be Peace in the Valley…. The only song you requested… well you finally have it.  I could write a book on what I lovingly refer to as “Scottie-isms”, as Mr. “C” was truly a man amongst men.  This is the first Christmas in 11 years we didn’t get our annual “let’s dress up” and go to dinner.  We missed that.  We remember. so fondly, the many New Year’s Eve bashes, dancing, eating, laughing and I can still hear Emily say…He doesn’t know how old he is!  I never thought I would miss “holding” dinner for Shawn because you called him for the 4th time in a week to “stop” by…and he faithfully did (every-time).  I remember you sharing how much you enjoyed the visit to the OSU stadium with Shawn and every year going with him to the Memorial Tournament.  I quit counting how many golf leagues you fellows were in but you sure loved the “game” and your Cincinnati  Reds.  I loved hearing you recount your youth…your sleeping outside, under the tree with your father and then on the porch when it was so hot to sleep indoors. The time you and your sister went swimming and saw your mother come for you “with murder in her eye”.  Talking about dressing up in your father’s Masonic garb and how it made you feel.  The times you were a peddler and met Fanny Brice (you said she was a real looker).  The times you danced at Meyers Lake in Canton, the hotels in New York, my how you loved being a peddler.  I loved hearing about flying and we missed our “last” plane ride, scheduled for September but you are piloting again!  I loved the way you talked about your family, especially your son, Pat and his wife, Polly.  I had never met her and only met Pat once, but I came to realize how “special” these children were to you as you filled my mind with endless memories of them. I came to think I had know them forever.  It was special to hear you talk about  your niece, Julie with such love, as well. I’m thankful for the day you asked me, “what’s going to happen to me when I die?” and we spent a little time every day discussing it.  I’m so very thankful for the day you said,  “Okay then…I’m going to be okay!”   I will never see another construction crew that I don’t laugh and remember all the trips to Riverside and the little wagers we made to determine how many would be “standing” around or the day Ophra did her last show and what you said about it.  You sure had an ornery streak.  Forever, seared into my mind, will be the day you tricked me and backed your car out of the garage….telling me you just wanted to drive one more time.  Okay, I said, once around the block.  You drove me all the way up Sawmill and I swore I’d never tell if you promised to let me drive back.  You laughed so hard at my shaking hands when you turned over the keys.  I loved how you had sayings for everything from, “he’s a good man” , to yap, yap, yap and your famous Rave on Ruth, rave on….you were truly a character.  One whom was loved by many, revered by some and honored by Shawn and me.  We will be forever blessed to have know you and Emily, to have shared life with you and we both look forward to the Big Band Dance in the Sky, when we meet again.  I picture you now….with your ornery grin….telling me you found out….you’re OK.

My fondest memories include the whole Collins and Metzger family together at Christmastime. The wooden dance floor in the basement was perfect for sliding around in socks. Stockings with all of our names hung on the mantle and the candy dish was always filled with goodies. I remember asking Grandma Emily if Santa will know to come to their house if I am not home and she assured me that I would hear the reindeer hooves on the roof. 

It mattered not what adult issues may or may not have taken place, as a child it was an amazing experience to have so much love in one home at Christmas. 

The memories that I have from Christmas at Grandpa Collins’ home will never be tainted and will only remind me of how blessed I have been to experience such moments of joy. 

In the summer, Grandpa used to take me to his office and I got to pretend that I was his secretary. I thought how awesome it was to play with all of the office supplies.  He never lost patience with me shuffling around his papers and I even got to play with his ink stamps to make everything look official. 

From the coo coo clock in the kitchen, to the dining room that served Thanksgiving, the Christmas tree in the living room, the basement filled with laughter and love, I have only ever been greeted by Grandpa Scott with open arms and this is how I will remember him.

Feeling peace in my heart knowing that his “being” can never be detached, only changed from human form to spirit form, back home with God and the ones he loved.

Pat, How sorry we were to hear about your dad's passing.  We know his love and counsel helped to make you the FINE man you are today.  Even though he is out of human vision, his spirit remains strong in you now and forever until you meet again.  love  Edward and Julie

Scott, I hope you and your bride, Emily, are somewhere dancing to the big band music you loved so much.  Thanks for being a grandfather to my kids, Chris and Emmy.  It meant a lot to all of us that we were welcomed into your family.  The ties that were forged with them are strong and we appreciate our incredible bond with Pat, Polly and Crystal. Dear Pat, I received the sad new about you father today and I wanted to let you know how sorry I was. I know you were close to your father and so proud of him. I know you will miss him as will I.  My thoughts are with you at this time. I apologize in advance for not being able to attend the services for Scott as I am at my winter home in South Florida. I will always cherish the wonderful memories of the many occasions that I spent Dear Pat, I received the sad new about you father today and I wanted to let you know how sorry I was. My favorite memory of Grandpa Scott is when, I had just got home from school and my mom had brought him Snickerdoodles from the 8 Sisters Bakery in Mt.Gilead and         My Mom, Brenna (caretaker), Grandpa and I were all on the front deck and my mom said "Scott I brought you some snickerdoodles!" and we all started eating them. Then I said "Blehhh these taste burnt or something!", Brenna said "Blehhh this is disgusting!", Grandpa said "These taste pretty good, good stuff!" and my mom said "Oh my these don't taste like snickerdoodles!" So a couple minutes later my sister Rachel showed up and read the bag and it said "SnickerPoodles" so we ended up eating dog food! My mom told my Grandpa Scott that we ate dog food and Grandpa started barkin' like a dog! We all started laughing! Love you Grandpa, I'm very blessed to have a wonderful Grandfather, I hope you finally are at peace.

My dad, Scott Collins, how lucky I was that he chose me to be his son and he my dad. He taught me through example the value of hard work, honesty and committment. I remember how he insisted on taking me to the airport to see me off for my tour in Southeast Asia even though it meant he had to get up at dawn. He was a good man who lead his life quietly and modestly. He was a remarkable example of strength and provided me with the same when I most needed it in my life. Thanks dad, I miss you, but am happy that you are now free.

My favorite memory of Scott is the wonderful day I got to share with Scott at the Zoo.  We walked around for hours having fun and making noises with the animals.  He had a permanent smile on his face the whole day.  I will never forget how much fun we had together.  I will miss you Scott, I have enjoyed the past few months I got to spend with you.

When I think of Scott Collins, who was my father-in-law, I think of an indivdual who worked hard all of his life and took great pride in his work. He  was a man of integrity and honor. He was always pleasant to me and grateful for anything I did for him. He was modest and humble about his successes. He flew his own plane and loved doing so. He is now free to fly boundless among the clouds of white and "touch the face of God". 

We love you Scott and shall always and forever miss you. Keep heaven alive and full of fun until we see you there.
