Stephanie Marks, age 78, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024. Born December 1, 1946 in Columbus, she was the oldest of four children of the late Joan Evans Hummel and George Peter Hummel, MD. Stephanie was a career educator with a life-long love of learning. A graduate of Upper Arlington High School and Miami University, she taught biology to generations of students in the Columbus Public Schools and tutored countless others in a variety of subjects. She was a devoted wife, a tireless mother and a proud grandmother. A contrarian with a wonderful sense of humor, Stephanie never lacked for opinions nor shied from informing others of them. She frequently exercised a stage whisper that embarrassed her sons well into their adulthood but apparently amused others. She was tough, breaking up fights as a teacher and mother earlier in life and enduring a series of painful illnesses with dignity and grace in her later years. She loved nature and was incessantly fascinated by science. She baked about a dozen types of cookies at Christmas for neighbors and her children's teachers and the mail carrier and the garbage men. She was a voracious reader. She cheered for the Buckeyes. She swam. She loved spending time with friends and family on the Fourth of July. Stephanie is now in heaven, where she is correcting angels' grammar and bragging about her grandkids.
Stephanie is survived by Randy, her loving husband of fifty-seven years; her siblings Peter (Linda), Melanie (Tony) and Paul (Leslie); her sons Kevin (Maria), Kyle (Shelly) and Jeremy (Michelle); her grandchildren Quentin, Christian, Nathaniel, Ryan and Olivia; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the physicians, nurses and staff of The Ohio State University Medical Center for their wonderful care and compassion. A celebration of Stephanie's life will take place from 2:00-5:00pm on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221. Since, as Randy noted, "she gave to every charity known to man", please be altruistic in whatever manner you choose and think fondly of Stephanie when so doing. Please visit www.schoedinger.com to share memories and condolences.
