

WILLIAM HOWARD LOCKHART, 84, of Westerville, OH., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., died January 28. William was born April 8, 1928, in Logan County, WV, a son of L.D. and Hattie Billups Lockhart. William was a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army, having served 20 years with the Regular Army and 10 years with the WV National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves. This service was marked by a duty tour in the Pacific Ocean Area during WWII, two duty tours in the Republic of Vietnam, a peace time duty tour in Germany, and numerous assignments stateside, including the Cuban Missile Crisis Expedition with the First Armored Division. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and The United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After military retirement, he served the American Red Cross as Director, Disaster Services, Greater Columbus Ohio Area Chapter. He directed response to local disaster incidents as well as serving on numerous national disaster operations including the American Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and assisting in redeploying Kurdish victims of Saddam Hussein's atrocities in Iraq. He also served as Director, Public Services for the City of Gahanna. Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Butler Lockhart; a sister, Lydia Ruth Martin; and four brothers, Hubert, A.D., Edgar, and George Lockhart; and granddaughter Claire Elizabeth Mager. He is survived by two sons, William, Jr, and Christopher Lockhart (Michele); three daughters, Deborah Fingerhut (Bruce), Mary Theresa Barber (John), Barbara Mager (Robert), three granddaughters, Catherine Carpenter , Bridgett Carpenter, Annie Mager; grandsons Christopher Lockhart II; Kyle, Dustin, and Joshua Fingerhut; Elijah Barber, Jonathan Mager; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Hylton and Lucy Warren; and four brothers, Robert, Wesley, Richard and Harold Lockhart. Calling hours are 5-8pm Friday, February 1, at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am, Saturday February 2, at Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. State St. Westerville. Fr. David E. Gwinner, Celebrant.
