Bill was born in Youngstown, Ohio June 28, 1948. His family-owned STOLL’S, a fine men’s clothing store, where, when not playing basketball with friends at Sheridan Playground or biking with them to Millstream Park, Bill spent many working hours learning the basics of the business world from his dad.
Bill was a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School class of ‘65 and attended Georgetown University, continuing his love of basketball as a walk-on to the freshman team. His loyalty and love for Georgetown was well-known to all, and he remained active in many ways, serving on the Board of Governors and in other capacities and forever an avid fan of Georgetown basketball. But his greatest tie was the lifetime friends he made at Georgetown.
After graduating from Case Western University in 1973 and completing two years of private practice, he joined the law department of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. There he took on many different roles, rising to the position of Deputy General Counsel with expertise in mergers, acquisitions and antitrust matters. In 1997 Bill left Westinghouse to become Sr. Vice President and General Counsel of Borden, Inc. in Columbus Ohio. In his final career move, Bill joined Lennox International in Dallas, Texas as Senior VP, Secretary and General Counsel, retiring in late 2008.
Bill was married to Patricia Musial Stoll from 1969–1985. They had two sons, Eric and Todd. In 1990, Bill and Sheryl married after bringing home from Peru their infant baby daughter, Marisa.
During the Lennox years Bill and Sheryl grew very fond of Texas, and with daughter Marisa a student at St. Edwards University in Austin, kept their second residence there until Bill could no longer travel easily. After retirement, Bill became a volunteer for several years with the Dallas AARP income tax program, annually assisting those in need with filing their income tax returns.
Bill was also active with Sheryl‘s alma mater, Cornell College in her home state of Iowa. Bill served on Cornell’s board of trustees‘ Investment Committee, making many good friends over the years. In 2014 he was made an honorary Cornell alumnus for his work and support of the college.
Basketball was always Bill’s passion and for many years he played at the Athletic Club of Columbus on its “Legends“ team, which he continued doing several years into his retirement. He was also passionate about his family history and spent years researching his mother’s Irish roots as well as his father’s German. Bill and Sheryl made several trips to Ireland over the years to visit places of family significance and to continue that research in person. Bill was an avid reader, especially of Irish novels. He also kept busy with golf, fitness training and traveling whenever possible to Seattle or Pittsburgh to spend time with his grandsons he loved very much.
Bill treasured time with family. When young he shared in their growing up years through baseball, soccer, and basketball practices, coaching elementary teams, school events, guitar lessons, advising on names for their rock bands, high school and church vocal performances and passing along his love of music of all types, but especially his favorite group the Rolling Stones. As they grew he became a master math tutor and enjoyed late night discussions about sports, politics, and our social world.
Bill and Sheryl shared a great passion for travel and were world travelers for many years. In addition to their many trips to Ireland, they visited their “English family“ best friends on the Isle of Wight, U.K. frequently. They had numerous adventures during those travel years by air, car, train and cruise ship, with trips to five continents and innumerable countries. Bill’s favorite memories in addition to Ireland and Great Britain were Australia, Paris, a Baltic Sea cruise and standing on Omaha Beach in Normandy with David Eisenhower as their guide.
In October, 2017 Bill was left totally paralyzed from the chest down due to a difficult spinal cord surgery, ending his days of world traveling, air travel, basketball, golf, skiing and so many of life‘s other enjoyments. Bill fought valiantly to come back from such a catastrophic loss altering his world. Again and again over four years he had to fight new medical conditions that set him back. Each time he was determined to overcome, but the last set of circumstances were too much for him to fight.
Bill will be immeasurably missed by his wife Sheryl, their daughter Marisa Elena Stoll, his son Eric Stoll (Emily) and grandsons Will and Alex, his son Todd Stoll and grandson Eli, sister Mary Ann Mason (Richard) and niece Laura Mason Chrysler (Rob). He was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth Walsh Stoll and his father William F. Stoll, Sr.
