Woodward Thomas Ross

Woodward Thomas Ross "Tom" of Upper Arlington, passed away April 6, 2017 with family and puppies by his side. Born June 9, 1931 to Wilson and Mary Ross. Tom grew up in Dublin, Ohio in the Fleming log cabin originally on Rings Road which has been relocated to Red Trabue Nature Reserve. He was one of sixteen students to graduate Dublin High School in 1949 where he served as class president and played on the football, basketball and baseball team. Tom was a straight A student at Denison University until his sense of duty called him to enlist in the Marine Corps to serve in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with medals. He returned to Columbus, Ohio where he met the love of his life, Shirley Newman Ross. He enrolled in the school of cosmetology where she was already attending to get to know her; they eloped in January of 1955. Tom and Shirley were married 57 years until her death in 2012. Tom worked at the Union department store beauty salons and later owned the chain of Cut and Curl salons where he worked side by side with Shirley. He attended classes at The Ohio State University for fun. He served as president on the State Board of Cosmetology and the National-Interstate Council of the State Boards of Cosmetology and retired from the State of Ohio. Shirley was his love but golf was his mistress. His retirement was spent hitting balls at Heritage Golf Club driving range for hours on end and playing golf with friends at Minerva. He was also active at the Upper Arlington Senior Center and UA Senior Golf League. Tom is survived by his two beloved daughters Christy (Rich) Brockunier of Califon, New Jersey and Cindy (Paul) Kruse of Upper Arlington, Ohio. He said he was also blessed to have such good son-in-laws and was especially proud of his grandchildren, Dr. Ross Brockunier, Emma Kruse, Paul Kruse and Keith Brockunier. Although, he will be missed we are happy that Tom and Shirley are reunited. Family will receive friends from 10-11AM Saturday, April 22, 2017 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., where a memorial service celebrating Tom's life will begin at 11 AM.
