At the age of 25 he travelled by boat to America to make a better life for himself. He came through Ellis Island before settling in New York. He married Moya O’Reilly in 1954 (his beloved wife, Moya, passed in December of 1984) and they had six children John Flynn (married to Monica Landis, who passed away in July of 2021), Colette Rutherford (married to David Rutherford), Gerald Flynn (married to Aliki Besson), Brendan Flynn, Maureen Rourke (married to Paul Rourke), and Jackie Flynn. In 1987, John married Diana Moran, who had two sons, Mark Moran (married to Dora Loiola) and Glenn Moran (her beloved son, Glenn, passed away November of 1988). John was predeceased by his two sisters, Patsy and Evelyn, and one brother, Tom, as well as many other dear family members, Michael and Mary Costello, and dear friends. May John, and all of his loved ones rest in peace and now be joined together in heaven.
John lived a wonderful and full life, and he was always surrounded by love and family. He loved Scotland and Ireland. He enjoyed soccer and tennis as a young boy, fishing throughout his life, and playing golf after he retired. He loved going to the Congers Senior Center on Wednesdays and Fridays to play cards and enjoy conversation with friends. He was a proud long time member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge. He and his wife, Diana, shared many happy memories and treasured moments over their 35 years of marriage. John is most well known in the community for his Scottish brogue, for being well dressed, always, and for being a fine gentleman. He was very active in the St. Paul’s Church community and his strong Catholic faith was the guiding force in his life. He loved his wife, Diana, dearly, all of his children, step-children, daughter and son-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as his dear sister-in-law, Agnes Kowalczuk and her family, Marie, Scott, Victoria, Kieran and Ryan. Sr. Catherine was a beacon of light, love and support to dad and Diana throughout their marriage. He was very proud of his family, near and far in Scotland, Ireland and England, and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Mass will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022 at St. Paul’s Church in Congers, NY at 10:00am. Family will gather together at 9:15am at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in Congers, NY prior to the Mass. The burial service will be at Madonna Cemetery in Fort Lee, NJ.
