John, affectionately known as ‘Tommy’, was a longtime resident of Lindenhurst. He was Brooklyn born and was raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He attended Brooklyn schools and graduated from Franklin K. Lane High. Tom worked for IBEW Local 3 in elevator manufacturing, maintenance and repair for most of his life; and due to his success, knowledge and experience, he also taught Electrician Apprentice classes for the Union. His career was important to him, and he enjoyed the work he did and the satisfaction of all the facets of his job.
His family recalls Tommy as a ‘fun’ guy, He’s recalled as a jokester, so easy to talk with, so very friendly and likable. In earlier years enjoyed going hunting with his family in upstate Forest Port, New York. Tom was a man who would always extend his hand to help to anyone who needed help.
Tom is predeceased by his beloved wife, Maureen. He leaves his cherished family – his son, Joseph Heron; his sister – Linda (Joseph “Butch”) Vaccaro; and his niece and nephew – Lisa (Sean) Kenney and Michael (Erin) Vaccaro. Also surviving is Tom’s longtime best friend and colleague, Kevin Fowler, who devoted himself to helping Tom during his illness.
Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Sunday, March 11th, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. A Wake Service will be offered on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. On Monday, Morning Prayers will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.
