Mrs. Cardona was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to her late parents, Guiseppe and Maria Petrilli. She emigrated to the United States in 1953. She met her future husband, John Cardona in the same town they grew up in, Taurianova, (RC) Italy. They knew of each other, but it was Dad that made himself noticeable and determined to win her heart. They married in 1947 and made their beginning home in Taurianova, Italy before beginning their lives in the USA. While Dad was in the army in Italy, Mom paved the way with her first two daughters, Maria and Rosanna. They traveled on the Nassau Transatlantic voyage through stormy waters to New York, stayed in Connecticut with family until her husband, John Cardona, made his way to New York. They began a new life together in New York and made several homes from East New York, Ozone Park, Glen Cove, Cincinnati, Ohio, back to Ozone Park, and to their final home since 1964, Baldwin, New York.
Maria enjoyed gardening, baking, music, Bible studies, exercise – she has exercised each morning joining in from the days of Jack LaLanne’s TV programs to others and up to around 7 or 8 years ago was still doing her 6:00 am walks.
