“Pat’’ was a fun-loving and energetic woman who delighted in attending celebrations, birthday parties, and any gathering of her large circle of family and friends.
Born July 17, 1941, in Babylon, N.Y., Pat was the first of eight children born to James McNulty and Mildred Spelman McNulty. She was raised in Deer Park, NY.
She graduated from Babylon High School in 1959, and she attended Farmingdale State College. One of her first jobs was working for the popular Rainbow Shops in North Babylon. Also, she worked as an operator for New York Telephone.
In October 1963 she married Richard Cherol of Queens, N.Y. The couple lived in Queens for several years. The couple also lived in California and Florida, where she ran a business installing window tinting. Her husband joined the U.S. Navy and the couple moved to Biloxi, Miss., while her husband served in the U. S. Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) in Vietnam. Richard died in 1990.
Pat worked for more than 30 years as an administrator for several regional unions. From 1975 to 1992, she was an Assistant Administrator for Local 888 Pension Fund, headquartered in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. From 1992 to 1994 she worked in a similar role for the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 50 Welfare Trust Fund in Manhattan. Later, she worked for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 888 in Long Island City, NY. She retired from full-time work in 2009.
A long-time resident of Holtsville, N.Y., she was active with local cultural organizations. She participated in bus trips sponsored by garden clubs, visiting regional flower shows and touring sites in the Northeast. An art lover, she attended exhibits at the Long Island Museum at nearby Stony Brook University. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. Also, Pat was a member of local church choirs over the years, most recently singing with St. Philip & St. James Roman Catholic Church in St. James, N.Y.
Many will remember Pat for her ability to light up the room with her beautiful smile, blue-green eyes, and fashionable attire, especially her collection of colorful hats. And nobody could tell a story quite like Pat.
Three sisters survive Pat: Elizabeth Engel, Kathleen Yost (Russ), and Loretta Berrick (Michael); and three brothers, Joseph (Sandy), Michael, and Gerald (Kathleen). Her parents and a brother, James, pre-deceased her. Also, nine nieces & nephews survive her: Kara Gonzalez, Timothy McNulty, Michael Pagan, Kelly McNulty, Maureen McNulty, Eileen McNulty, Miranda Johnson, Rachel Yost, Katherine Berrick, and Melissa Berrick. She also had several grandnieces and a grandnephew.
The family is grateful to the staff at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center in West Islip, N.Y., who cared for Pat in her final weeks.
Memorial arrangements will be private.
