Lieutenant Colonel Derrick Alwin Curtis, USAF, Ret., passed away on January 30, 2019 in Dallas, Texas. He was born on Sunday, September 27, 1942 in Las Cruces, New Mexico to the late Rev. Wilson A. Curtis and Geneva B. Curtis (née Pollard). He was the beloved husband of Yoni K. Williams, his wife of twenty-eight years.
After graduating from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, he joined the United States Air Force in which he served for twenty-seven years before retiring in 1993. His service included piloting B-52 bomber planes during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Air Force, he helped his wife run a flower shop in Irving, Texas for over twenty years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a golf fanatic with a deep love for dogs and horses. He was well-known and loved for his ability to spontaneously craft and recall a seemingly infinite supply of jokes.
He is survived by his wife, Yoni; three daughters, Susan Patton and her husband Kelly, Sandy Geyer and her husband Eric, and Samantha Williams; two granddaughters, Misty Links and her husband Greg, and Ashley Gann; five great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Lilly, Lawson, Elizabeth and Christopher; and sister Laurann and her husband Roberto Diaz Soria. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved canine companion of fifteen years, Sofie.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Rolling Oaks Funeral Home in Coppell, Texas. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm.
