Grace Tsien was born in 1944 in Guangdong Province, China, the third of six children: Tony, Emma, Bill, Lisa, and Eddie. She attended high school in Hong Kong and was later accepted to National Taiwan University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1967. She subsequently moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she met and married her husband, Frank Tsien.
In the early years of their marriage, Grace and Frank lived in several states—including Iowa, Maryland, and New Jersey—as they pursued educational and professional opportunities. Their daughter, Laura, was born during their time in New Jersey. Grace completed her Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Rutgers University and went on to build a distinguished 20-year career at Mobil Chemical in the Research and Development Polymer Division. She held multiple patents in the field of polymer extrusion techniques, reflecting her innovation and dedication to her profession.
Grace was baptized in 1957 and remained steadfast in her Christian faith throughout her life. Over the years, she was an active and devoted member of several church communities, including Jireh Church (Matawan, NJ), Chinese Christian Church (Somerset, NJ), and Chinese Baptist Church congregations (Fort Worth, Bedford, Bethel, and Glory). She was especially passionate about teaching Sunday School and English as a Second Language (ESL), faithfully serving and encouraging others in their spiritual growth.
After retiring from Mobil in 2000, Grace and Frank embraced the opportunity to travel extensively. Together, they visited Italy, Germany, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, France, England, the Caribbean, China, and Taiwan, creating many cherished memories over the course of their 57-year marriage.
In 2009, Grace relocated to Texas to be closer to her family after becoming a grandmother. “Popo,” as she was called by the kids, delighted in caring for her grandsons, Mason, Tristan, and Aubrit. From changing diapers and supervising Chinese homework to attending their many activities, she was deeply involved in their lives. Above all, she prayed faithfully for them to grow into godly men of strong character and faith.
Grace went to be with the Lord on January 22, 2026. She is survived by her beloved husband, Frank; her daughter, Laura; her son-in-law, Russell; her grandsons, Mason, Tristan, and Aubrit; her sisters, Emma of Washington, D.C., and Lisa of Vancouver, Canada; her brother, Eddie of Vancouver, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
For those who have inquired, memorial contributions may be made in Grace’s name to Chinese Baptist Church of Bedford or Bethel Chinese Baptist Church.
