My grandma was amazing in all things pertaining to joy, faith, and family. 

Though she is no longer here with us, this is a moment to honor a beautiful human being, whose presence filled rooms with comfort, laughter, and fierce loyalty—to family, to the Red Sox, and to Tom Brady as a patriot or Buccaneer alike even when football wasn’t her favored sport. 

Life felt steadier with her in it, as if traditions mattered more and wins felt sweeter simply because she cared so deeply. The Red Sox weren’t just a team; they were part of the rhythm of the seasons, woven into conversations, celebrations, and quiet afternoons. Tom Brady represented excellence, grit, and heart—qualities she admired and carried in her own way every single day, with a hint of that high school thing girls tend to have for the football captain.

More than anything, she showed what it meant to love without condition and to stand by what mattered, no matter the odds. Her strength lived in small moments: the way stories were told, the way pride showed up for family, the way joy was found in shared victories and simple togetherness. Though her chair now sits empty, her spirit remains everywhere—echoing in cheers, in memories, and in the unbreakable bond of family. She will be dearly missed, always loved, and forever remembered.

She is now with God, her faithfulness and grace never wavered, and  it’s because of this that I know that she will watch over us all and always be a part of us and even those she never got to meet, because the Holy Spirit was strong in her and it is because of people like her that we can find faith where others cannot.

She was the most amazing great-grandmother to her two great grandchildren, an incredible role model for her grand children, an even more amazing mother, and excellent sister to my aunts.

We now must remember the Alamo that lived amongst us, and aspire to measure up to how incredible of a person she was to honor her for as long as we can.

Te amo profundamente y te agradezco por cada momento que compartimos. Tu amor, tu ternura y tu fortaleza han sido un regalo inmenso en mi vida.

Guardo recuerdos imborrables de Silver Lake: el olor tan único de la casa, el sótano, los paticos, las tardes viendo televisión, los paseos al lago y las caminatas hasta la concha acústica junto al Charles River. Recuerdo con cariño mis primeros juegos en Fenway, las visitas a Boston, y esos pequeños momentos cotidianos que hoy cobran un valor infinito.

También llevo en el corazón mis años de infancia en Wilmington, los peanut butter sandwiches, la primera vez que esquié en Vermont, y aquel verano de 2004 que, aunque difícil para mí, coincidió con la alegría de ver a los Red Sox romper la maldición. En esos años aprendí a encontrarme a mí mismo a través del deporte y de la familia.

Hemos compartido vida en tantos lugares: Venezuela, Miami, Costa Rica, Vermont, Dallas, Tampa, Colombia, Washington D.C. Celebramos matrimonios, nacimientos y nuevas generaciones. En 2018 cerramos un capítulo especial en Boston, y en 2023 compartimos otro momento inolvidable con Saúl en un juego de spring training. Tu legado vive hoy en tus bisnietos y en cada valor que sembraste en nosotros.

A veces siento que la vida y la distancia no nos permitieron compartir todo lo que hubiéramos querido, pero confío en que solo Dios conoce ese plan perfecto. Gracias por regalarle estos años a mi mamá; permitirle cuidarte llenó su corazón de alegría y fue una bendición inmensa para nuestra familia.

Hoy compartes comunión con la Eucaristía y con Jesús en plenitud. Será una vigilia eterna, llena de paz y amor. Prometo honrarte e imitarte en cada momento de mi vida. No es un adiós… es un hasta luego.

Querida suegra:

Nuestra historia es tan extensa que cuesta resumirla. Nos conocimos en 1980, cuando María y yo comenzábamos nuestra vida juntos. Poco después estuvimos en Colorado con Iginita, en Vail aprendí a esquiar. Desde entonces me aceptó y me acogió durante años con armonía, respeto y afecto.

Me acompañó en mi graduación como urbanista. María y yo nos casamos en 1984, y usted fue un motor clave en ese proceso. Durante décadas la visitamos en Boston; la última vez fue en 1995, en su casita de Silver Lake, cuando empezábamos a descubrir Internet.

Compartimos Navidades, viajes y celebraciones. Cuando huimos de Venezuela, llegamos golpeados por la vida, y usted estuvo allí. Más adelante se mudó con nosotros y vivimos juntos la llegada de los nietos, sus bismietos: Liam y Saul.

Convivimos casi cuarenta y seis años: la mitad de su vida y una parte muy significativa de la mía. Compartimos migraciones, cambios políticos, momentos difíciles y espacios inesperados, como el club de poesía en inglés del Senior Center de Coppell.

Conocí de cerca su fortaleza moral, su inteligencia y su curiosidad incansable. Vivió transformaciones históricas enormes —del telégrafo al celular, del ábaco a las computadoras, de las guerras mundiales al viaje a la Luna— siempre con fe y mente alerta.

Fue pionera y referente: ingeniera civil, antropóloga, magíster en educación bilingüe, fanática de los Red Sox, viajera incansable y guía espiritual de la familia.

Su partida dolió, pero su despedida fue una lección de como morir  en sus términos: con una fuerte fé  y esperanza en Dios, en su casa y rodeada de los suyos. 

Me reconforta saber que ahora conoce la eternidad y que sigue cuidándonos desde allí.

Buen viaje, suegrita. Espérenos con paciencia.

No tengo palabras para describir a Iginia. Si tuviera que decir algo de su personalidad sería lo siguiente: una mujer familiar (siempre hablaba de sus cinco hijos, de sus nietos y de sus bisnietos). Iginia era una mujer muy piadosa que, a pesar de su edad, nunca dejó de asistir a misa diaria, rezaba el rosario y hacía la adoración perpetua. Rezaba todos los días por cada uno de sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos. Se preocupaba por el bienestar de cada uno de ellos.
 Fue una mujer muy intelectual, leía constantemente y estaba puesta al día de todos los temas de actualidad. Le encantaba el deporte, el béisbol, y su equipo favorito era "Boston Red Socks". 
Era una mujer muy abierta a todos, muy amigable, que transmitía paz y serenidad. Sé que está en el cielo, cuidando de cada uno de nosotros. Te quiero mucho, Iginia.

Red Sox Fan Fasionista

For the past 20 years, every March except 2025, my mother-in-law has traveled to Tampa during spring break to see her beloved Red Sox. She typically flies via Southwest, and as soon as the plane lands and passengers disembark, she's quickly recognizable. Known by us as the Red Sox Fan Fashionista, she dresses in head-to-toe red, proudly displaying the team's branding. Sometimes she wears a red hat and dress, other times red pants with a blue hat adorned with Red Sox insignia, or a red skirt paired with a red pullover. Regardless of her outfit combination, her mission was clear: to share her passion and love for the Red Sox with everyone she met.

Throughout that week, my husband would drive her around Florida to catch the Red Sox spring training games. She always stood out—not just because of how healthy she was for her age but because of her unwavering fanaticism for her team. For her, each game was more than just baseball; it was a celebration. When the Red Sox were winning, she delighted in popcorn and chocolates; when they were losing, ice cream became her comfort.

Her love for the team extended beyond clothing—her home was filled with Red Sox memorabilia. Her bedspread, earrings, bags, and cups bore the team's emblem, a testament to her deep connection and passion.

She was a true fan and an example of devotion until the day she passed away. Her enthusiasm, her spirit, and her love for the game will be missed dearly. We may never again witness such an iconic fan as La Señora Iginia, the Red Sox fan fashionista.

Thoughts and prayers for all of you. One of my fondest memories of Iginia was when we went to go visit her and she was swimming in the lake behind her home and she just got out of the water with her swim suit and her swim cap smiling away. She was so full of life, adventurous, inspiring and a lovely woman.

I am sad to hear this. She was so full of life. I admired her for not letting her age get in the way of living her life the way she wanted, traveling and attending mass regularly, as most do. It was a pleasure working with her and getting to know you guys.

Señora Iginia, me siento muy afortunada de haberla conocido, Usted fue una maestra que me enseño perseverancia, compromiso y amor cuidando su salud con buena ailmentacion y ejercicio. Me encanto ver a sus hijos consentirla y ver su hermandad y muestras de cariño. Fue una mujer muy afortunada y bendecida siempre de la mano de Dios, que no se dejo vencer por la edad y siempre estuvo en busqueda de nuevas experiencias y conocimientos. I only knew Iginia from a far, but every time I saw her I thought to myself, I want to be like that lady when I grow old, God willing. She was always cheerful and faithful to her prayer and confession. She was an example to everyone who knew her, even me, who only knew her from a far. May God help us remember our actions and example effect everyone around us, even those not especially close. God Bless Iginia. I’ve already asked for her help from heaven.

De mis primos “gringos” siempre me ha llamado la atención el amor que se profesan, llamándose de “usted” no siendo gochos, su independencia desde niños, en Sebucán cada quien preparaba o procuraba su alimentación, allí había siempre varios tipos de dieta, para adelgazar, para engordar, para alta competencia y otro largo etcétera. Esta independencia, la cual he meditado mucho, creo se debió a los tíos y su plena confianza en sus hijos. Esta forma de educar me ha servido a mi para emular en la educación de los míos.
Descansa en paz querida madrina y un gran abrazo a mis primos “gringos”.

Parte 1 de 2: 
El pasado domingo 4 de enero recibí el mensaje del fallecimiento de mi querida tía y madrina Iginia. Para mi fue una noticia repentina porque aun con sus 95 años de vida gozaba de buena salud, o por lo menos eso pensaba, ya que la tía Alicia fallecida apenas hace 6 meses era la que mantenía informado a la familia en Caracas.
La recordaré alegre, con una sonrisa que muchas veces terminaba en su característica risa. 
Leyendo la esquela me vienen a la mente gran cantidad de recuerdos que comienzan en los años 70 cuando de un día para otro me entero, o quizás más justo decir, tomo consciencia de que tengo unos tíos y unos primos nuevos, y mejor aún, no uno sino dos nuevos primos de mi edad. Recuerdo ir conocerlos en la casa de El Cafetal, aún desembalando, y ver que tenían televisor a “color”, mesa de hockey, y largo etcétera de cosas exóticas para mi provenientes de Boston. También recuerdo la primera vez que me quedé a dormir y levantarme muy temprano para esperar horas con los ojos abiertos en la cama a que se despertaran mis flamantes primos nuevos que finalmente lo hicieron hacia el mediodía (ya las próximas veces me levantaba y jugaba horas solo mientras se despertaban). Luego vinieron los paseos al club Puerto Azul y mi primer encuentro con el llano viajando con el tío Tony a Santo Niño en Zaraza. Mi primera experiencia en el mundo de los negocios con nuestra miniteca “Hot Stuff” con los mejores socios del mundo, mis primos los morochos. Recuerdo luego lo que a la larga se convertiría en una diáspora (o quizás un retorno?) de los primos, sin recordar exactamente el orden: Beatriz, Antonio, Iginia ,  mi madrina y Alfredo (solito un tiempo en Sebucán o Las Marías) y por último  la  casi obligada  de los Mirabal Boccalandro.

Queridos María, Iginia, Alfredo, Antonio y Alfredo:

Enterarme esta noche del fallecimiento de vuestra madre ha sido algo muy doloroso. Iginia fue una mujer única, llena de energía, interesada por los temas mas variados y con verdadero amor por la vida. Era una figura Renacentista, en ella se combinaron las Ciencias y las Humanidades en el marco de una fe generosa y sin estridencias.

Fue una madre ejemplar, ustedes son testimonio fehaciente de ello. Fue una maestra extraordinaria, bondadosa y paciente, y es que esa dedicación la llevó a hacer muy bien las muchas actividades que a lo largo de su vida emprendió.
Para mi Iginia fue una verdadera amiga, una gran confidente y una maravillosa consejera. Siempre atesoré mis conversaciones con ella. Su vasta cultura era campo fértil para tantos temas, desde las biografías que tanto le gustaban, hasta los libros de Harry Porter. 

Ella creó las condiciones que me permitieron cambiar el rumbo de mi vida y la de mi familia. La primera fiesta de cumpleaños de mis hijas en USA, cuando eran muy niñas fue en el jardín de su casa en Wilmington frente a Silver Lake. Su presencia fue fuente de fortaleza cuando mi esposa Carmen Elena falleció en el 2005 y cuando ese mismo año tuve una cirugía de emergencia, Iginia se aseguró de llevarme apoyo espiritual.

Esta noche esos recuerdos convergen en mi mente y en mi corazón: Las idas y venidas al aeropuerto Logan, los juegos de los Medias Rojas en su televisión o en los cines de Woburn en el 2004 cuando los Medias Rojas por fin ganaron la Serie Mundial, el té frio mientras hablábamos frente al lago, las cenas de Acción de Gracias.

Junto con mi mas sentido pésame van mi admiración, afecto y la gratitud mas profunda por lo mucho que Iginia enalteció la vida de mi familia, la mía propia y la de todos aquellos cuyas vidas ella tocó.

My Dear Bea,
I just received the sad news about your Mom.  She was truly a woman described by abounding and superlative adjectives. I loved when you would bring her to visit. Sitting and conversing with her,  that soft smile on her face, I learned a fraction of her incredible life story.  Her excitement and joy at the Red Sox games was precious to watch. Her sense of adventure shone through a sparkle in her eye on our boat trip to PTown.  On your last visit at Phyllis’ she was over the top about how delicious the fruit was and her perfect steak the night before.
It was too short a visit but I will cherish all of them.  What a beautiful human being!
Your words about your aunt and the importance of minutia resonated with me.  It is about making connection and finding our common threads. Thank you for sharing your Mom with us. May her legacy live on in all of you.

Iginia loved horses. In 2018, therefore, her children gifted her a trip to the Belmont Stakes. Amazingly, it was the year the Justify won the triple crown at that very race, one of only 13 times any horse has won this distinction in 106 years! Iginia is pictured here with me, the lucky child who got to take her on this trip.

I first met Iginia in 1985. Over the years, I had the privilege of witnessing her lifelong influence from a unique perspective.

What struck me most about Iginia was her stoic, quiet strength. She was a woman of iron will and deep determination, reserved, yet incredibly decisive. When action was needed, she moved with purpose and practicality.

To look at her five children today is to see her greatest masterpiece. Iginia was a trailblazer and her most beautiful achievement especially in today’s world was the way she served as the steady center of her family. She didn’t just raise her children; she inspired them to achieve, to serve, and to remain devoted to one another and to her. They stayed close, always finding ways to be together, staying organized in how they supported her, and keeping up their frequent family calls. Seeing them orbit her with such love is a testament to a life truly well lived.

Iginia leaves behind a legacy of faith, courage, and an endless curiosity for the world. She was the quiet strength and the steady center of her family, and her influence lives on in the meaningful lives of the children she raised so beautifully.

I have been blessed to witness the impact of such a remarkable woman.

Iginia and I worked as volunteers at the White Rose Organization. At an age you would have thought she would stay off any kind of work, she worked diligently with others always driving herself to the location.
May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Este día conocí a la GRANDMA, El día del matrimonio de mi hermana, el ser más maravilloso y lleno de luz y de una inmensa bondad en su corazón.
Hoy honramos la vida de una mujer valiente, de esas que no se rinden, que luchan incluso cuando el alma está cansada. Una mujer admirable, guerrera incansable, que dejó huellas imborrables en cada corazón que tocó. Su paso por esta vida no fue silencioso: fue ejemplo, fue fortaleza, fue amor entregado sin condiciones.
Aunque hoy ya no esté físicamente, su esencia permanece viva en sus enseñanzas, en su sonrisa recordada, en la fuerza que sembró en quienes la amaron. Trascendió porque su legado no muere; se multiplica en cada acto de bondad, en cada recuerdo, en cada vida que ayudó a transformar.
Gracias por tanto. Descansa en paz, guerrera eterna. Tu luz sigue guiando nuestros pasos.

What a blessing it has been to share the last twelve years of life together. Thank you for showing me, by example, how to live and how to die with fortitude, deep faith, optimism, and grace.

We walked together through moments of joy and moments of trial, and through it all our love and mutual respect only deepened and matured. Those years were a gift I will treasure forever.

Thank you for every sacrifice, for the sleepless nights, and for the countless hours you spent on your knees praying for me and for my intentions. Your prayers have borne fruit beyond what words can express, and our lives are richer because of them. We are endlessly grateful.

I will miss you more than I can say, but I trust with certainty that God has prepared a special place for you in Heaven. Please know that you can always count on my prayers, my thoughts, and my intentions, just as I could always count on yours.

Iginia will be missed by both of us. Marci and I have known Iginia for
over 20 years.  I met Iginia in 2001, studying latin at a Benedictine
abbey in Harvard MA.  A year later, Marci met Iginia on a catholic tour of Sicily. We will always remember Iginia for her kindness, her dinner parties and her rock solid faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. In 2002, at one of Iginias dinner parties on Silver Lake, Marci and I met for the first time.  Two years later we got married and are still happily married, all thanks to Iginia, who also came to our wedding in PA. Even after Iginia left Massachusetts for Texas, she made sure to visit us every summer during her annual pilgrimage back to see her beloved Red Sox here in Boston.  This coming summer we will be
missing her annual visit, but we know that she is now with our Lord, and we are certain that when she arrived, and saw him face to face, that he greeted her and said, 'Well done my good and faithful servant.'  We love you Iginia, and we will see you again.

Iginia’s beloved Silver Lake in her backyard in Wilmington, MA, where she would faithfully do her daily water aerobics from March to October!  Linda and Deb, her very lucky neighbors.

In the fall of 1989 I was a guest in Iginia‘s house in the Boston suburbs. While I was grasping for clarity on my master’s thesis and seeking to divine my life’s course, (and installing a yard-demaking hedge, twice)  I benefited from her hospitality, her kindness, and her respect for my privacy.  I got to know her better through the charming and funny stories that Bea would tell me.  A woman who LOVED her family, was brilliant in idiosyncratic ways, and took great satisfaction in every Red Sox victory.

Iginia, a very loyal friend, a Boston Red Sox faithful but most of all God’s favorite daughter. A woman of class, dignity, fun loving, intelligent human being! Who cannot love this  beautiful lady?!?!

Iginia always had a kind smile for everyone and has given us all such a good example of maintaining a growth mindset to the very end. She will be greatly missed. With love and prayers, I offer my deepest condolences.

Cada vez que se acercaba la temporada de béisbol, yo recibía un texto de la Sra. Iginia. ¿Vamos al juego de los Red Sox?  Comprábamos los boletos y nos íbamos…ella vestida de lis pies a la cabeza de Red Sox y yo de lis Rangers. 
Hubo una temporada que los Rangers barrieron a los Medias Rojas y a ella no le pareció gracioso cuando le llevé una escoba. 
La voy a extrañar Sra. Iginia!

She had curiosity for everything and was always up for adventures! Tenía curiosidad por todo y siempre estaba dispuesta a vivir aventuras.

Iginia also volunteered at the White Rose Women’s Center, she was a great counselor that helped many pregnant women and saved many lives!
She was always kind to everyone.

We were heartbroken to hear of Iginia's passing, and will always treasure the time we had with her here at the Coppell Senior & Community Center.  
She always had a smile on her face, and when her health allowed, was here to do her chair yoga and zumba.  She didn't move fast, but she did move, and we admired her for that!!
We will miss her - our prayers and love go out to her family.  God bless.
