William (Bill) Gilbert Swanzy, age 84, of Coppell, Texas peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Bill was born on August 5, 1937 in Austin, Texas to Charles Gilbert and Vivian Juanita Swanzy.
Bill dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was one to quickly tell a joke, loved life, friends, and Texas A&M.
Bill is survived by his “beautiful wife” of 63 years Thresa Swanzy, children Kevin Swanzy and wife, Sharon and Cheryl Quast and fiancé Mark Engler; grandchildren Jonathan Swanzy and wife Alison, Bradford Swanzy and wife Chelsea, Sarah Swanzy, David Swanzy, Stephanie Fleisher and husband Scott, Allison Quast, Michael Quast and wife Rachel; seven great-grandchildren and brother Don Miller.
Bill became a Texas Highway Patrolman in 1962 that laid the foundation for his insurance adjusting career. He started with McGee and Moore Adjusters in Austin, Texas in 1965. He retired as a Property General Adjuster in 1996 after 22 years with GAB Robins. Bill worked numerous catastrophes as an adjuster, catastrophe supervisor, and file examiner after retirement until 2014. During his career, he introduced his son Kevin to the insurance claims industry and both achieved General Adjuster status.
Bill loved traveling with Thresa going on 13 cruises and traveling to China, Prague, Vienna, and the Holy Land. He had many friends at Saint Albert the Great Parish in Austin in both the Great Club and the Knights of Columbus (KC’s) of which he was a Fourth Degree member. He fondly spoke of the smoking brisket, chicken, and pork with the KC’s.
After retirement, Bill worked as an usher for the Round Rock Express minor league baseball organization. He loved cheering on both the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. Bill also began a business with intricate scroll saw woodworking making beautiful crosses, military and collage plaques and other items such as swans, butterflies, fruit and various sayings selling them in craft shows. Bill took great pride in his woodworking and enjoyed talking to people about his crosses, plaques and work.
Bill was proud of his Swanzy heritage and founded the Swanzy Family Association in 1984 spending hours researching the genealogy from Texas to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1740. Over 700 direct descendants! His interests ranged from golf, woodworking, boating, water and snow skiing, scuba diving, photography and camping.
A funeral Mass for Bill will be held Monday, January 31, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at St. Ann Catholic Parrish in the Chapel, 180 Samuel Blvd, Coppell, TX 75019.
Following the funeral Mass will be a committal service from 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM at Rolling Oaks Memorial, 400 Freeport Parkway, Coppell, TX 75019.
